bottom line, if you want to attribute jackson's comments to how blacks think, that's your decision

Jackson doesn't speak for black people you are right. No single person can represent an entire race, but the perception exists. He is one of the most prominent black men in America. Makes me think about the South Park episode "With Apologies to Jesse Jackson."

Stan - "Its ok, my dad apologized to Jesse Jackson. Its cool."

Token - "Jesse Jackson is not the voice for all black people."

Stan - "He told my dad he was."

Paraphrasing as I can't remember the exact lines.

You called the Gilbert's comments more irresponsible than Jacksons'. I'm just calling it like it is.

And as to your other point... If you want to attribute the comments of Sarah Palin, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, etc to how conservatives think, that's your decision.

Whitlock did not say that, and no one in this thread has either. However, your continued implication in that regard is why you're coming across as annoyingly defensive in this thread.

The words Whitlock used were "We come across like people..." - a statement that deals with perception. And that's the crux of the issue with Jackson. He is perceived as a voice for African Americans, and his statements are objectively stupid and antagonizing. Given the perception aforementioned, there is no doubt in my mind that statements of this nature cause the reaction Whitlock fears.

In summary: Jackson, do the world and African Americans a favor. STFU.

at some point, the onus of an individual to not perceive is on that individual. I don't even know what organization jackson leads now, he hasn't been politically relevant since the eighties.

I can't stop jackson from saying jack, and I'm not going out marching in the streets to say he doesn't represent me

    Sure - I mean, it's a pipe dream, but in theory...sure.

Of course, blaming them is far more convenient than acknowledging the underlying perspective, and addressing it accordingly.

More to the point, Whitlock's admonishment was directed at the black community for allowing this tripe to be bandied about. It was an appeal, in my opinion, not a castigation.

A spokesman of who, though? It seems the only people who pay attention to what Jesse Jackson says are the media. Does black America actually care about him anymore?

I understand he used to have influence and relevance, but it's almost like he's now just famous for being famous.

    Not really.
Jessie has done some great things
Let me repeat. . some GREAT THINGS not only for Black folx
    but for America.

That said. . he has done some Facepalming things too.

one does not overshadow the other unfortunately.

I personally. . . take JEssie as he is.
He still has the ability to help folx
    but
he has the ability to hurt his cause.

Someone had to be the 1st black person to run for president
before you can have the 1st black president.

Whitlock said his email box was full of people saying the same thing.

This defense also seems to be similar of Rush and company. It is not just one crazy person thinking it.

Major asked who was he a spokesman of. Well many emails of the people he is a spokesmen of according to Whitlock.

I don't understand your jab. Do you think whitlock lied? Do you think there are not more people that did not bother to email but also feel the same way?
