What I got from that link is that Kobe just threatened not to play for the nets. The same thing stevie did with the grizz.
I don't like what Kobe or Steve did because what is the point of getting the 1st pick in the draft when the top 5 players all say they WON'T play for you . . . you might as well have the #6 pick How are you suppose to get better yes they have the power to do it and they use it. . . but as for the league it is not good because. . it keeps some teams from being as competitive as they could be I mean it is also like players taking less to play in LA than if they had to play else where that hurts the league as well . in competitiveness Rocket River
Rocket River, I agree that it hurts that totality of competitiveness in the league, but there's also another factor to consider. It has been long argued that big market clubs or teams with great fans (as LA has with the lakers and NY has with the Yanks) should be rewarded with better teams more frequently. Is it fair to say a team like Charlotte should win as many championships as the Lakers or Knicks? Well, no. Charlotte has less fan support so its easy to say that a team like the Knicks 'deserve' more competitive teams since they have more fans, etc. I can say this, basketball is a lot closer to achieving a high degree of competitiveness than baseball so I don't think this is a big issue. Of course nothing competes with football, they've got their stuff together and that's why they're kicking basketball and baseball's arse in the US over the last several years.
The team that plays the best over the course of a season(s) deserves to win. I don't care if they're based in Gotham City or Podunk, Oklahoma. And, I don't think the lottery should be rigged to help the larger markets.
If the top 5 players don't want to play for you, then maybe the 6th player will be a better player for YOUR team? Get what I'm saying? Maybe a happy #6 is better than an unhappy #1...
Have you ever seen the nba logo that Jerry West he was mj before we thought about mj . He is icon and he can spot talent in his sleep. First look at 1 Derek Fisher 2Devean George( a more athletic version of our hero Rob horry) 3 Nick the Quick second round 4 Kobe trade for Divac was sheer genius. Lay off of Jerry and enjoy the championships he has created.
Jerry West said he wouldn't draft a high schooler, but thats what he did in Kobe. Some teams management just isn't good. memphis already ahd a point and they had just seen Iverson at 2 guard and tried to duplicate it. It was guys like Lamar Odom on the board who would have been very good along side SAR, but they took someone elses idea and thought it would work for them. Teams are bad from the top down.
I hope you're not bashing him for this... In the NFL Draft, 90% of NFL teams lie about who they will take, just to make sure their secret guy is still around.
Well, West is right, it hurts the game to have players saying they WON'T play somewhere. I would lock up a players rights for 4 years after they have been drafted, then when they said they would not play for an organization, I would let them rot for a couple of years working at McDonalds and then we would see what happens. DaDakota
What happens when the nba expands overseas in 20 years, and American born players are drafted by a Russian or a China team ? Well, I guess there is a McDonalds everywhere now a days.
West is right, and he is a hypocrite. As for the McDonald's thing: ain't gonna happen. The kid would just go play in Europe, earn a couple million and still be happy (Danny Ferry). Sure they wouldn't get the tens of millions the NBA would net them, but they sure as hell wouldn't be flipping burgers at McDonald's so long as the NBA isn't the only professional basketball leauge in the world.
Believe it or not, there is life outside the states and Europe. Really. I'm using a computer in the middle east. Did your jaw just drop? LOL! That's a different story. BTW, DaDa, the way you want it, is wasting talent. A bunch of hard working players isn't going to sell players. The flashy ones that can score a lot sell tickets. That's what the NBA wants. Truth be told, I think if a player states he doesn't want to play somewhere. That's fine. Draft him, and trade him. You'll get equal value as long as you keep it quiet. That's the simple way....
Fine, then let them go to Europe and play, but lock them out of the NBA for 4 or 5 years...or only let them in if they play for the team that holds their rights. Sane, you are in the M. E.? Be careful bro. DaDakota
That's actually a very good idea DaDa. It may also help out this expansion plan, by familiarizing young players with Europe from now. Whatever. (Yes, I am in the M.E. , but quite far from any trouble. Afghanistan is across the Persian Gulf from me, and Palestine is across Saudi Arabia. It's actually quite safe around here, contrary to belief. Thx anyway. )
