Thats to bad. Although i cant stand the jazz or the spurs, as i have gotten older and seen the prima donna athlete get away with more and more, i have great respect for the old school coaching ways of jerry sloan and gregg popovich.
Rick Bucher was on ESPN First Take this morning talking about this. Airs again at 11am CST. Pretty good info; it's the only thing I've heard about this topic though so I didn't know anything before watching him.
Why would you think deron is the player he is today had he not played for the ultimate PG/PF style coach? Deron is a good guy, and sloan is a stubborn coot, but the man dedicated too long to that franchise. My hate is with the people of utah, not their coach. He conducts himself well and is among the tier of ringless coaches like adelman and nellie. Why would you blame them? I have known some utonions, as wierd as they are, Jazz basketball is like a subculture down in utah and sloan is like the father of it all and rightly so. Have bashed the guy before, yes call me a hypocrite, but don't confuse hate with competition.
Players not named Kobe don't have a right to talk smack to coaches. Kind of like with AB etc. You're looking at a guy who orchestrated a team that nearly beat the greatest player of all time two years in a row. He has taylored players that have acheived legendary status, and no matter how much deron might hate it, he would have been a better person for letting sloan b**** him around. hes good. but not that good. And alot of this hate stems from the brewer trade in which Deron openly stated he was pissed to the point he might not resign.
he was one dirty b*stard, but he was one of the smallest wimpiest players you would never think was a HOFer. dirty or not, he was a good player, and instead of hating blindly, we hate them because they are classless ****s, but raw skill, emotion, and clutchness is something we should all learn to appreciate and complement regardless of the person's status. Rivalries remain, but even enemies can learn from one another.
I can remember, as a child, watching Jerry Sloan the player, and thinking, man, that's one tough, hard-nosed SOB.
exactly what I'm trying to say. I'm not a fan of the people. But I am a fan of the ethic they instill. I was brought up on it, and have seen others without discipline or direction fall. They might seem like they're branding their player's asses all the time, but the coach wouldn't be the coach or the sage figure to look to in crunch time center stage while the whole world watches if he didn't act otherwise.
Any team, that's not the Lakers or Spurs, that isn't blowing up his agents phone right now is pretty foolish.
I dont know what Sloan would have done if AB had walked off from his team in the 4th quarter. would have shot him or would have made him cry for sure.
I am a fan of Sloan's and Coach Pop despite the fact they coach the 2 franchises i dislike the most. Great post !
this is ridiculous. sloan prolly wanted to quit before the deron debacle. i wonder what he could do with a team like the clippers. the heat he could definitely win the championship with but not many coaches could screw that up. utah couldve saved a lot of trouble and traded us deron for Martin. we have a number of floppers who would fit in well in Utah.
I still have no idea how people can comment on how they hate the jazz but have all the respect in the world for Sloan. The only hate I have for the Jazz is because of the dirty tactics taught by Jerry Sloan. It's fine to respect him but it's contradictory to also complain of cheap shots and flops. I wish him well, I'm just happy he's away from basketball. It might be too late to matter though...
did i say that? i agree - as i said, its a shame to see him go out like that. i hate the coach and the fans. i love southern utah though - some of my favorite places are there - bryce canyon, arches, canyonlands, zion, gobblin valley, deadhorse - i wish texas would annex that part of the state. where did i say i blamed them? right - and as i said, every caller i heard from slc was 110% behind sloan and were really pissed at deron.
In an interview during the Jazz game tonight, Karl Malone drove the bus over Deron Williams and then backed over him. He also shamelessly pimped himself out to be the next Jazz head coach.
