the history and culture of houston is soooo far less boots and rodeo than dallas it isn't even funny. aside from this rodeo event we host every year (where i saw bill cosby perform as a kid) the cultural differences...largely stemming from houston's foundation as a place for wealthy east coast folks to speculate and, more recently, from the international diversity that comes from being a port city. dallas puts rhinestone on...and it glitters. but their culture is far more of a celebration of the cowboy/western culture than anything houston has ever been. far more. houstonians are houstonians first...and texans second. particularly those who've been here for generations. that's not the same throughout texas..including dallas.
Show me some facts. I don't have time to look that up. Everyone thinks of Houston as boots and cowboys everywhere I go. Not so much Dallas. I've lived in both. We're talking Dallas. Not Ft. Worth or Mesquite. I think myself as Texan first, then American. Everyone is different, so you can't really speak for every person that lives here.
Not sure how to show you that. Read a book on Houston's history. There's a great one called Houston: The Unknown City (1836-1945) that is fantastic...particuarly good with regard to who founded Houston...how it was founded and developed...and the groups that did. That Houston is infinitely more diverse than Dallas...and its effect on the city's culture...i'm not really sure how you missed that if you've lived in both places. That other people around the country aren't aware of it is something I won't dispute and something I'm not sure I care much about.
I never said Houston wasn't diverse. I went to UH. The most diverse school in the nation. I didn't miss it. Houston was settled by New Yorkers and Dallas was settled by Europeans. That was a long time ago. Dallas is a look at what I have city, look at my watch how much $$ I spend. Trust me. This spolied brat on my college baseball team cried so much about our uniforms that he made his dad donate $ to the athletic dept. to buy us new uniforms. Houston is a more relaxed city definitely more a boots and cowboy hat feel to it. Trust me, a lot my friends do the boot and pearl snaps. Even when we go to midtown. It's Houston. When I was at UH, everyone did the boots in our frat and so did the frats. Ask Texanskan. I never saw anyone in college in Dallas where boots. Jerry got it right. And there's nothing wrong with that.
I will certainly not argue that Houston is a far more relaxed town. I'm simply talking about the cowboy culture...i'm not relating that to relaxed.
Perception is reality and seems you're sorta defensive with the Houston Kicker image. I've let go of the national perception on H-town a long time ago. Who cares if the nation thinks we all wear boots and chaps? Actually they're the nutsac going by your pic.
Just list the sports franchise names of each town. Game over. Dallas: Cowboys Mavericks Rangers Stars Dallas: All Texas folklore and "yeehaw!" Houston: Texans (Oilers previously) Rockets Astros Aeros Houston: All oil industry/grit, technology and aerospace. Dallas=faux Texas "culture" Houston=real Texas business and money source
I see a lot of irony in the owner of a team whose mascot dresses like this: *please note boots and hat And whose cheerleaders dress like this: *please note boots (yes, guys BOOTS, all you are noticing) to say that:
Word. I, too, have lived *near* both (what can I say, I'm a small town dude). Spent a lot of time in each city. And while I have to give some credence to ryan17's take about Jones's comments probably not being intended as an insult, Max and IROC have it right. Absolutely right. And Dallas sucks. Stupidest cliché in history; congratulations for quoting it. News flash: reality is reality. You can put your rose-colored glasses on (to quote a very bad country song) and perceive that the sky is pink, but it's blue. Just because the sheep who only gain their opinions from the boob tube "perceive" something about Houston does not make it "reality". You want a taste of reality, come to the greatest city in the world and walk around. Breathe some real (humid) air, talk to some real people. To put it like the kiddies on the Internet seem to nowadays: Houston >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dallas
Not defensive...just disagree with the notion that Houston embraces the whole Texas/western culture more than Dallas does.
When I used to live near D-Town, the entire West End of downtown Dallas, on a nightly basis, became on outside "boot-scooting" party. Rhinestone Cowboys abounded. I couldn't get out fast enough.
