Bev is definitely a better defender than Sura. Those Sura/Wesley/Barry teams were fun to watch. They started that three point hand gesture thing, or I just liked the way they did it. It was super cool!
You are misstating the problem. Jeremy Lin fans annoy the rest of the Rockets fans because they would be willing to sacrifice wins for Lin's success. If the Rockets succeed while Lin is not playing well many people will argue that he was not being utilized correctly. It's never Lin's fault when he does not succeed. He was either injured, poorly utilized by McHale or denied the ball by another player. I am all for fans who want individuals to succeed. I want DMO to become a starting quality PF but I do not make excuses for him when he does not perform.
Does it bother you to the point where you seek out Lin threads to bash Lin? Why even open up a thread like this one? I just don't get this part.
It's just weird to me. I can't even begin to comprehend looking up to an athlete like that. Just seems unhealthy and very strange. I think that's beyond being a fan. Not my life so obviously my opinion won't hold much weight but it's just almost uncomfortable to read stuff like that. It something a stalker would write. Like the weirdos who converged on Yao's house and took pics/had him sign autos, That's not normal behavior
It's all about you guys making up the facts. Please give some quotes remotely resembling that type of hypes from Lin fans.
Why would it be unhealthy? I mean if you have a good role model to look up to, would it not be healthy? would you want your kids to model after Lin or JR smith? (Lol I know not a great example). Fandom usually is not normal. What about people who riot because of sports, or people who stab others at stadiums and start fights? Are they unhealthy and obsessed? I mean, if these LoFs were tattooing Lin on their body parts and stalking him for autos and looking into his life every aspect, yea that is pretty stalkish and creepy.
What have I made up and why is it my responsibility to do research for you on this board? It's not like your search function doesn't work the same as mine and you haven't seen those posts.
Neither. Lin is a good guy but I wouldn't want my kids to look up to any professional athlete or celebrity. Obviously, JR Smith is garbage so it would be an easy choice between the two but we also aren't talking about kids here. Most of these people are teenagers or "adults". I think it's all ridiculous. I'm certainly not defending that either. The racism in soccer is despicable and fans getting stabbed at baseball games deplorable. I'm not advocating any of those either. The LOFs are weird to me. Worshipping a player in the NBA just isn't normal. That goes for anyone who does it but I can only speak on this board.
This is a ridiculously laughable post. -These aren't kids. They are grown men. -how about just not having a role model that is an athlete. That's pretty sad. Yes. Those people are unhealthy and obsessed too. Why are you trying to use that as a counterexample? This definitely happens. It's well documented.
Fair enough, if you wouldn't want your kids to role model after an athlete. But teens and adults can cheer people on can't they, that can represent them in some way? Example: olympics - people of all ages teen or adult, support their athlete and can be emotional and want them to do well. Another example could be - someone who may not have went down the road of pursuing their basketball dream because people thought it that race may hold them back or maybe it is perceived unsuitable to pursue basketball or some sport because chances of success are small. That might be while younger, but now as an adult - maybe Lin can represent that dream to them and pave the way for others. But I see your perspective of things as well, just pointing out what others may see.
Why is having a role model that is an athlete sad? I mean I'll respect what your saying but you should provide a reason why. Maybe I will see things your way
IMO athletes should absolutely be emulated for their athletic achievements and respected and praised for that. They should not serve as moral compasses and are some of the worst kind of role models (i'm sure you know why). They are there to provide us entertainment and that's about it
You don't look towards athletes as role models, that's almost always a bad idea. You do however look to good PEOPLE for role models. Too many people unable to separate an athlete from a person. For instance, Jordan was an amazing athlete, but all things considered, a lousy role model as a person. Same can be said about Kobe and Barkley. Then you have people like JJ Watt, Mutombo, Yao, and others who you SHOULD admire as role models because of what they do and who they are OFF the field/court. In short, if you are looking towards an athlete as a role model, you are probably not going to do well. If you are looking towards a good person as a role model, that's a different story.
Absolutely. I'm not condemning that at all. We all cheer for who we like and sports can definitely create an interesting bond amongst strangers. I've been at many sporting events high fiving the people around me and enjoying it like I was hanging out with old friends. I can definitely see that and respect it. Like I have said a few times on here, I honestly think Jeremy is a great guy. Just because I'm not a fan of his on the basketball court doesn't mean I don't acknowledge how good a person he is. The two are completely separate for me. I just feel some people are so emotionally invested in athletes (not just Lin) that it goes way beyond being a fan at that point. I mean a dude challenged me to a fight over a discussion just last week. That's really sad. I see yours as well. Good points and quality conversation.
LMAO at the street fight in other thread. Yeah that was pretty funny. That's true that people are invested emotionally into athletes - but there's a line where it goes a little too far. Agreed - it's nice to see a good discussion out of all these threads instead where people try to 'argue' rather than discuss. Now we can be myspace pals. Like this comment pls! lol kidding.
Fair enough - while Kobe is a lousy overall role model (off the court and sometimes on the cour), there are things about him, that people would want to emulate and can appreciate, as in his competitive drive and spirit. That can translate over not just basketball, but maybe towards a person's outlook on life. Sports role models can be just a metaphor for overcoming barriers, difficulties etc. Random example: I remember Johnny Flynn's role model and inspiration for playing ball was, Aaron Brooks. He said that he was happy to see a guy his size to be able to play pro ball and that inspired him.
