Do you know any other player who is Asian American, graduated at Harvard and went on to play in the nba? Those people giving out this kind of dollars are smart businessmen. They're not randomly blowing their money. His 1st contract with Nike was probably worth next to nothing anyway. Also, from what I read, Lin's yet to extend with Nike. He will probably receive a big deal soon.
Nike (and all shoe companies) throw out a ton of money every year. To a certain extent they do "randomly" blow their money. They sponsor teams and start building that relationship very early on (i.e. AAU teams) with the hope that if a kid beats those astronomical odds and makes it to the NBA, he'll sign with us. With the amount of money spent every year "building relationships" on kids years away from the NBA it really seems like a no-brainer to sign the only Asian baller around.
