Is this an acute or chronic problem? For me, it's chronic.

Dragic's money is out of Les' pocket.
Lin's money is paid by the Knicks and Rockets can get $2M out of the tax..

    big difference.

Obviously the plan isn't to get Lin. The plan is to make it harder for NY to trade Lin

    Dig this

More reasons to not be over the tax, it SEVERELY hampers regular basketball moves.

Every small market team should do this, this is the only way to be on the same level as larger markets. WHich is why the owners were so split. This will allow smaller market teams to maneuver easier when larger markets are strapped. Smaller market teams have to be more money orientated, so this does give them a slight advantage... at least to me it does.

doesnt Lin kinda screw himself though by making New York in a worse situation in year 3 of his contract. It will make it harder for the Knicks to sign players and hinders his chances of building a winner. not sure if any of it matter though since Melo and Stat are both one dimensional players that cant win.

I should applaud Morey for offereing Lin $8M a year? I think not. That's not a good contract, as far as on the court value goes.

In all honesty, I dont think Lin wants to be in NYK.... that would be the only reason to stick it to NYK..... i am just saying...

Yes sir. This is some of the stuff I was talking about. This CBA is full of goodies. It's not as simple as the Knicks being a profitable team here. They are going to be significantly handicapped if they match this offer and it is going to be difficult to find teams who will help by taking on a really bad contract.

Do we want lin's offer Matched?

If Lin's offer gets matched then that enables us to trade for Dwight.

If it doesn't then getting Dwight gets a lot more difficult.

So, do we really want Lin?

Also, this new CBA is going to make a GM like Morey all the more valuable because if he does get Dwight, we will need to be able to be smart and creative to keep adding pieces that are competent role players without hurting our flexibility.

Can you really say you screwed yourself when you're making almost $15 million dollars in 1 year? Plus if the NYK suck by then he can bounce to another team since that is the last year that he is contracted.

He wants to be there. His brand is more valuable there, clearly. But why wouldn't he take the extra five million the rockets are offering? Btw, the Knicks are sure to match bc of lin's off the court value. So for this e of you who are worried about overpaying - don't. This is a certain match. Knicks should have come to terms with him in the first place. Because they told him they wouldn't pay until he got an offer, they did this to themselves.

My question is , why didn't we sign Lin sooner - we could have been at the Asik stage now, and that much closer to a Howard deal.

    naw, its ok.

by him starting that, it allowed us to easily add a poll to this thread now that the signing is official.

Wow, so if the Knicks match...in 3 years, if they want to sign a player at the mid-level...it'll cost them almost 20 million dollars. Just filling out their roster will be brutal for them. Nice move by Morey.

And for those that are bringing up Dragic...thats a totally different situation. Dragic wanted a player option...Rockets dont do player options unless its a superstar. Thats a deal breaker for Houston, it had nothing to do with the money on hand.

Not nearly as bad. That 3rd year is going to be brutal for them. But in general, being over the lux tax threshold is going to become a major problem for teams. Heat, Lakers...they are in for a culture shock.

as long as they are above "the apron" (over 4M over the lux tax line), then yes.
