They spend money but they have a basketball player too.

Les can go as cheap as he wants but his team is a laughing stock in NBA. Hope he is as proud as you guys.

I don't know why people are so worried about the Knicks total salaries with taxes. It's a team that paid a crap-ton in salary for years while running out one of the worst, most mismanaged and embarrassing squads.

Not that they want to be giving away money, but they can always find ways to lower the cap impact if necessary and if not, don't care as much if they're winning and signed a player to fair value.

The real issue is, is Lin worth $8+ million a year? I don't think so, but we'll see one way or another now.

I was going to say the Knicks could use the amnesty clause on Amare to avoid all of this but they used it on Chauncey already. LOL

Well honestly, they can't expect to be winning that much with this kind roster and they'll be paying more than they ever have before. You are talking about a payroll at the Yankee level with lower revenues and less winning.

I mean look, I hope they match. I don't really want to be paying Lin $8 million a year. Don't think he is worth it.

Do you think it possible that they'd be able to trade those top salaries to a team under the cap? I think so. They'd get back a TE. No guarantee that there'd be a team ready and willing to take them, BUT all three players will both be on their final year, as will Lin.

If it's working, Knicks don't care about cost. If it's not, they make some moves. They may not get under the cap, but there are ways to lessen the impact.

Morey's not the only GM who can cut salary if necessary.

I think they'll match, but this means re-signing JR Smith next season and using their taxpayer MLE for the next two years is certainly out of the question.

The Bobcats are the undisputed laughing stock of the NBA.

They sure can. And they will be desperate. Morey is setting himself up to lin big. The Rockets currently have $11 million on the books in 2014.

With the new lowered salary cap and all the other CBA rules, it's going to be very hard to move $23 million contracts for a single player.

I'm guessing much of the spending is about protecting the brand from erosion by Brooklyn. I wouldn't be suprised if they aren't thinking about profit/loss much in the short term, but rather protecting the value of the franchise brand.

If they were at all concerned about tax, they wouldn't have done the Kidd/Camby deals. Those two weren't that important.

Can anybody remind me how the NBA works? Do they keep all the revenue advantage from New York like local TV, or is there sharing?

Agreed, but possible. Also, a team under the cap could send back some salary.
And finally they could always just trade out salary for salary, with the goal of finding a better fit. That wouldn't improve their payroll, but might improve the team.

Absolutely. It's not that far-fetched to think that the Lin associated branding, in NYC, is as important if not more so than the Yao associated branding was for the Rockets. I didn't get the Linsanity, but it sure was powerful.

NY has one of the highest revenues in the NBA and is very profitable. They are owned by cablevision so it doesn't matter if they lose a few million for a couple of years. It helps their television ratings to have a winning team.

FWIW, I'm not saying they won't match, I'm saying they SHOULDN'T logically and that they are going to be lose a ton of a money to keep Lin. If he ends up busting it's going to be hilarious.

If in 2014 he's a bench player, he's going to be costing them a ton and bringing in nothing. LOL
