    @HowardBeckNYT

Expect Knicks to take full 3 days to match. Standard operating procedure in NBA to make the other team wait, tie up their cap.

    On the 3rd year (2014-2015):

    Stoudemire + Anthony + Chandler + Steve Novak > 63M, with Shumpert's salary (2.8M) team's option.

If they match Lin's contract, it will make a total of 78M for only 5 players. Luxury tax thresholds from 2008-2012 have been around 70-71M. Under the new CBA, standard tax for 10-15M over is $2.5 per one dollar over, and for 15-25M over it is $3.5 per one dollar over. If they match Lin's 15M on the 3rd year, they might have to pay 15M x 2.5 = 37.5M or even more if they go 15M over (at least 52.5M).:eek:

Why is David Aldridge so sure the Knicks will match? Does he have a source?

    2014-2015 Knicks Roster

    Amare - $23.4 million
Melo - $23.5 million (player option)
    Chandler - $14.6 million
    Shumpert - $2.8 million

Including Lin we are already talking over $79 million for 5 players. What about the rest of their roster?

Are they really dumb enough to add Jeremy Lin at $15 million when they already used their amnesty AND the luxury tax rate will go from $1 for every $1 over $70 million (check me on that) to $3 for every $1?

Here are their options: Lose Lin - Lose Big

The Rockets have $11 million on the books in 2014. I think Morey may be setting himself up to win big in the future.

I think they will still match the offer but if they do...wow.

The Knicks are going to be in a really painful situation. Their team really isn't good enough to win a title and they are going to be in a situation where it is impossible to add players. They won't be able to acquire players via trade in sign and trades because of the CBA regulations on trading for players when you are over the luxury tax line as well.

Yikes. I'm not a Lin fan so this isn't me rooting for us to end up with him, but the Knicks might really want to consider letting him go at these dollar figures.

They'll definitely be well over that, otherwise they wouldn't be able to field a team. They can sign another 10 people for vet min and that's still another 10m dollars.

What would be awesome is if the Rox do get Lin in this it would really rekindle the NY-HOU feud in the NBA.

Signs could be held up in Toyota center saying something like "Lin=payback for Beltran."

If this is solely a basketball decision there is no way Knicks match that offer for Lin. But MSG wants to retain Lin's (marketing) rights

So in year 3 the Knicks might be paying Lin more than Kobe Bryant? Is that possible? Math is not my strong suit. That would be insane.

Well, they won't be paying Lin directly, but the 37.5m is how much his salary that year is going to cost them in real dollars
