It's only a $15M cap hit for the Knicks. For the Rockets it's a $8.36M for all three years.

    ^^^

You guys aren't getting it. The contract would be divided evenly over the next 3 years for Houston. It's only backloaded if New York matches, in which case they pay the 15 mil.

That was/is the same deal for Asik, no?

    It was originally

@WojYahooNBA: Offer sheet for Lin will pay him $5M in year one, $5.2M in year two and $9.3M in years three and again in team option year four, source says.

Man, that 3rd year might actually sting them.

So the offer changed? It used to be 5/5/10/10 with the four year being a team option right? So Rockets made the poison worse?

15 million in year 3? That season if the Knicks are well above the salary cap that 15 million could result in 30 million in real cash because of the damaging taxes.

I think it will, but after year 2 he is a huge expiring contract that may make him very tradeable...

15 mil in yr3 will make it harder for NYC to match...[hopefully]

if this works, Lin + D12 [if that trade works], def a decent start for the Rockets

By the way, the previously leaked/rumored deal was supposed to be worth $28.8M over 4 years ($7.2M annually). Quite the difference to a 3 year deal worth $25.1M ($8.36M anually).

The Rockets either upped their offer in hopes to pair Lin with Howard, or it was a ploy from the get go.
Either way, the Knicks will now have to pay an even heftier price than before, if they choose to match.

We have been hearing this for years but in reality rarely does a big salary figure end up getting traded. The only reason it is happening this season with Martin is because we are involved in a huge trade potentially.

What do you mean by "only"? Last I checked $15m is almost 2 times $8.36m.
I'm aware of what the hit is for the Rockets; I'm not concerned about them. I don't want the Knicks to match was my point. The Knicks will have $76m committed to 4 players in Lin's third year. I don't think they'll be able to match that. I get they can afford it, but that seems like a pretty big difference to me.

Yeah a $15 million salary for Lin would be hard to trade for the Knicks (if they needed to.) $10 was already hard, but going to $15 really limits the type of player he can be traded for.

i agree but if they trade lin in year three, they can trade him to a place that has cap space and can generate a large trade exception.. by that time they would have figured if he is worth that amount... my belief is he will under achieve.

Rockets bumped up offer to Lin by fully guaranteeing all three years, worth $25.1 million. Previously, third year partially guaranteed

The Rockets improved the offer because of the need at the point, but also to make it a bit tougher to match $14.9 mil in year 3. (Was $9.3).

These are actually good numbers for Lin as a Rocket. His salary next year is high enough to make up a good portion of a potential SnT with the Clippers for Chris Paul. Clips would get just as much limelight with Lin on a nightly basis. And he's cheaper!

A team that is $15 million under the cap? It's pretty rare for a team to take on a player with that kind of money owed for one year without wanting to send something back.
