Lin is only 23 years old. What makes people think he won't get better? The league/officials will be on his side.

Just out of sheer morbid curiosity..

    Suppose NYK matches.

But, Kidd winds up stealing most of the minutes, Lin rides the pine and doesn't do all that well when he does get on the floor.

The adoring fans turn on him.

NYK decides, ok, now is probably a better time to try to trade him than in 2 years, when nobody in their right mind will take him off our hands..

    Up pops Houston, smiling kindly.

Question I have is, how would the contract structure hit us?

Would it be the same as it is for NYK - 5/5/15 ?

Or would it revert back to our original parameters - @8/8/8 ?

I suspect it is the former, but I was just wondering if anyone knows how that COULD go down..

I doubt it. Officials are biased against Rockets and people of Asian descent. How many referees of Asian descent are there working for the NBA?

Pure speculation, but my guess is 5/5/15...in which case, that might be too tough of a contract to bring back.

@Sam_Amick Hey Sam. There's a petition going around to keep Lin in NY. Any RT help - w/o endorsement - would be awesome change.org/petitions/new-…

I'm not 100% sure just 50% sure but from my understanding if Knicks match the offer

    1. They can't trade Lin till Jan 15, 2013

    2. They can only trade Lin in the 2012-12 season with Lin's permission

    3. Houston is the only team the Knicks CAN NOT trade Lin to for the 2012-13 season at all

    4. In the 2013-14 season Knicks can trade Lin at any time to anyone without Lin's permission including to Houston

Listening to ESPN radio. They suggested Lin's Chinese marketability would be a selling point for retaining Dwight in Houston - Dwight wants to increase his 'global brand', and that is a large part of his desire to be in NY. But having Lin (per the ESPN radio host) could provide the global marketing power he craves through China.

I'd be interested what knowledgable people think: ring of truth or total BS? Is it a big enough factor to make a difference in potentially trying to retain DH? Will Lin alone alter NBA programing decisions and popularity in Asia in favor of the Rockets?

It wouldn't hurt our chances of resigning DH12 if Lin is here. Howard like every NBA superstar usually goes to China once to promote themselves and the companies they endorse

It's common sense. Dwight will be an international icon with Lion. Heck Chuck Hayes of all people was getting big money thanks to yao.

Once Howard experiences what the Asian market could bring to the table, I think he will want to be a part of that...no doubt, in my mind, that it would be a HUGE selling point in Howard staying.

It'll happen, but they'll be gone by then, only to pop up occasionally when Lin has a bad game.

Seems pretty obvious, the Rockets are well-established in the Chinese market and adding Lin to that should bring back all the YOFs. Howard would be a huge star over there.

they went hard after Nash, didn't extend Lin and told him to go find an offer, sign Kidd who states he wants to run the show in the clutch, boast about how they will match anything and then trash Lin for taking the most guaranteed money?

Some in the new York forums were suggesting that they match Lin and then trade him ' we can't lose him for nothing' but my understanding is that the contract will then take on the form of the 5/5/15 offer, this making Lin quite hard to trade cause of the cap hit.

Thats what I'm hearing. Its not the amount of money so much. Its how it further TAKES AWAY ABILITIES to make moves.

I'd like to get a rundown on what those restrictions are. There's newer rules that REPEAT lux tax payers get more PENALTIES, lessening things they can do.

But if NY sees its window of opportunity to compete is the next 2 years, it'd make sense to keep Lin for 2 of those as its best point guard they can have, then HOPE they can deal him on that last year. Thats where rules get all tricky where teams over or under the cap have different rules, only can get back certain things, can't expect trade exceptions, etc.

If Lin helps them get a title in the next 2 years or even gets them into an NBA Finals, they can swallow some of that amount. But they're probably thinking Lin isnt THAT guy and they can get 85% of Lin's oncourt performance for far less

Looking through Larry Coon's CBA Faq here are some penalties I found:

    * The Bi-Annual exception is not available to teams above the apron ($4 million above the tax line).

    * Teams over the apron have a smaller Mid-Level exception (3 years, with a lower starting salary).

    * Starting in 2013-14, teams above the apron cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade transaction.

I guess this means they could not use Lin and other team resources to nab Chris Paul in a sign-and-trade deal.
