Why would the Knicks' salary cap space matter in a trade? I not questioning Bima's info from Twitter here. Just trying to understand his point since it seems important...

Clutch really needs to start bringing out the ban hammer to deal with the growing number of trolls on this board.

So why not just decline to match Lin then? They must plan to match if they'd rather rework a trade with Portland than just do the easy thing and decline to match Lin.

For salaries to match up. NY is over the cap, so they need salaries to match up to have the trade approved. They can match Lin's offer sheet because of RFA offer and owning his bird rights.

Probably just to be annoying and delay or kill a possible Howard trade to the Rockets.

I don't think it's right to ban someone over their opinion, regardless of how ridiculous it may be. You can always hit the ignore button.

Thanks. I understand that. What I don't understand is how NY receiving Lin's offer sheet could affect the Felton sign and trade, which seems to be what BimaThug was suggesting in his tweet. If there is a connection, I would tend to agree that it would explain NY's behavior...at least a little bit.

I think the revision to Lin's contract took NY completely by surprise, so they bided for as much time as they could while they figured out their next move. That included playing hide-and-seek with the courier.

Sorry for the double post, but what I don't get is if Lin was so sure that the Knicks would match the revised contract he signed with Houston, therefore keeping him in NY, why would he agree to a "poison pill" contract that would put his team the Knicks into salary cap hell?

Free agency, especially for a young player,is usually about the money.

Because he was going to get more money? Status quo for a free agent.

In this Lin contract story, I don't think we are winner. Rockets gave Knicks hard time in Lin's contract matching story. It will not be surprise teams like Knicks fight back in the future. It is a lose-lose situation.

For teams over 4 mil over luxury tax threshold, they can't receive a player in a sign and trade.
I believe Lin's deal will do that.

Lin doesn't care, nor wants to be with the Knicks.

I'm sure most teams are cheering us on for sticking it to a New York organization. If they do match Lin everybody gets a cut of the Knicks' luxury tax. If they don't, well, one more star (marketing wise) out of a large market.

I think the problem is that the second NYK accepts the Lin contract offer, it places a cap hold on NYK until they decline to match. This cap hold literally would have prevented the deal for Felton from going through. So, in order to get Felton AT ALL, they could NOT put their hands on Lin's contract offer until Felton's deal was done.

At least that is what I THINK I have taken from all of this so far.
