I'll point out one other thing. The reason that teams don't spend assets solely for the purpose of creating trade assets is that when it comes time to use your TE, you are competing against teams with cap space. Anything that you can do with a TE, you can do with cap space. Nowdays, there's typically a good number of teams with cap space each offseason. Those teams can offer the same cap relief to a team that a team with a TE can. That means that there's quite a bit of competition to provide cap relief in return for assets. This year was unusual. Kawahi's free agency decision drug on so long, most of the teams had used up their cap space. Then when PG13 decided he wanted out of OKC, that turned the Thunder from a team trying to compete to a team that was going to rebuild. All of a sudden then wanted to dump salary and most of the options that were available a a week before were gone. Teams generally aren't going to invest assets just to acquire a TE since they have no way of knowing if they'll ever be able to use it. The vast majority of TEs never get used.
In case anyone is interested. Here's the trade exceptions that the Rockets currently have: The date at the end of each is the TE expiration date. And before anyone asks, no you can't aggregate a TE with anything. Trade Exception $1,544,951 ($1,544,951) Chinanu Onuaku trade with DAL 08/01/2019 Trade Exception $2,584,136 ($2,584,136) Ryan Anderson trade with PHX 08/31/2019 Trade Exception $955,172 ($955,172) Michael Carter-Williams trade with CHI 01/07/2020 Trade Exception $1,512,601 ($1,512,601) Carmelo Anthony trade with CHI 01/22/2020 Trade Exception $3,206,160 ($3,206,160) Marquese Chriss trde with CLE 02/06/2020 Trade Exception $3,620,014 ($3,620,014) Brandon Knight trade to CLE 02/06/2020 Trade Exception $1,621,415 ($1,621,415) James Ennis trade with PHI 02/07/2020 Trade Exception $1,512,601 ($1,512,601) Nik Stauskas trade with IND 02/07/2020 Trade Exception $1,544,951 ($1,544,951) Wade Baldwin trade with IND 02/07/2020
Wow didn't realize he had such a great year shooting the three and at 4 a game! Seemed like every time (which wasn't too often) I watched the Thunders, Grant would often be left wide open on the perimeter (much like their other players). The previous season Grant shot 32% but at less than 2 a game, so If his 39.2% performance this past season isn't a fluke but real improvement, Grant's future will be huge, along with his next contract!
So we have 2 that are $3 million-plus? Seems like we could do something with at least one of those to get someone useful. Thanks for the list. I didn’t think we had that many!
These TPEs are of pretty good size and could be useful to yield a player at the trade deadline this season.
