This is weird in that when coaching, he tries hard to dominate the game and let the players take a backseat.
he didn't just develop this personality for television, that's just him. you gotta think there's a reason why all his players love him, and it's not the grumpy guy you see on tv. that's the act.
its obviously not dead, otherwise we wouldnt be talking about it now . i'll take another stab at it this really rubbed me the wrong way...why the hell would you just go all grumpy during the press interview. glad the prima donna's gone.
prima donna? why on earth does it matter what his demeanor during a press conference is? how does that in any way effect his relationship with his players and his ability to coach the team. "act" was the wrong choice of words on my part. i think he was geniunely grumpy after a game, but i'm fairly certain that didn't carry over towards his players, atleast when it wasn't merited. anyways i don't know why i keep arguing about him....
great point. i think people just completely missed jvgs humor. I am not looking forward to adelman's postgames...but there were a must with jvg.
Van Gundy has always been funny and upbeat. Its just no one got to see what he was like in practice and in the locker room.
JVG's rapport with Jackson was awesome. he really got MJ to loosen up. They were the only remotely entertaining thing about the finals.
A funny JVG story I remember: One day at practice after everyone sat down for the video session after shooting JVG said: "Guys I have a question for you. Last night I was coaching my daughters basketball game and on 1 possession a player on my daughters team took an ill-advised shot and the other team got the rebound went the length of the floor for a layup because my daughters team failed to get back on defense. What should I do? Should I make them run sprints tonight at practice or just let it go?" Dikembe Mutombo: "Who won the game?" JVG: "We won 28-2 But thats not the point we gave up an uncontested layup because we did not get back on defense"
Haha. At his daughter's age (she's going to 7th grade), there is no such thing as an ill-advised shot. TRUST ME. I just got through coaching a bunch of middle schoolers. Just putting up a shot and not turning the ball over should make any middle school coach, especially girls', very happy.
I remember hearing something right after we hired JVG several years back about how he missed "being miserable" from coaching. He knows it takes a lot out of him, but it's almost like he can't live without it. He'll be back soon I think ... he's just a workaholic.
Spurs, Mavs, Jazz, Suns and Nuggets. The announcers were saying at the end of game 4: How come is Cleveland not fouling? They just let the clock run down. Van Gundy did not comment. Deja-vu.
