Taking out the fouling out rule would just make the game boring, everyone would be taking cheap fouls, aka Hack a Shaq and Hack a Dwight. I do think that they should add 1 more foul to foul out. I think in the game last night that JVG said that too, I agree more with that.

Don't agree with JVG on this at all for the reasons already expressed, a lot of free throw shooting. I think the idea of though of adding more fouls is a good idea and I think the NBA should have something like a coaches challenge with video review.

Finally if the problem is ticky tack fouls called early in the game then instead of making a change that will wholesale change the nature of the game, no fouling out, why not just tinker with the rules on what is called, or even better, make calls consistently?

I agree when a player gets six fouls or more they should not foul out but the opposing team then takes three free throws for that foul and every subsequent foul by that player. :p

This has to be one of the dumbest arguments I've ever heard. Of course these rules don't exist in baseball or football, because there's no way those infractions can be abused for an advantage. Why would a baseball player ever want to commit an error? Why would a football player ever want to be called for holding?

The goals are to make there be significant penalty for fouling, yet keep players in the game so that fans are properly entertained.

Personally, I'm not af fan of giving the offense back the ball, or extra free throws...anything that makes it more beneficial to draw a foul then to actually attempt a legit shot.

What about giving each player 2 fouls per quarter? That way if Yao gets 2 fouls in the 1st, he has to sit till the start of the 2nd. Right now as is, RA would sit him anyway, but atleast he can go back in and play without having to worry about extra fouls. I'd want to add though that all players can return in the last 2 minutes of the game, and cannot foul out at that point, including any overtime. All other rules remain the same.

Additionally, the offense can chose to retain the ball instead of shooting free throws. You can hack a shack all you want, but you won't get the ball back. If you hack a Yao, well then you're giving away two points for sure. I personally don't like it when teams foul on purpose just to get the ball back. The last 2 minutes of the game shouldn't be played any differently then the rest of the game.

So yes, I see that people are definitely going to foul more in the last 2 minutes and overtime, but it's crunch time, players need to earn it a little more. In most cases these days, players still have fouls to give and are fouling anyway when it counts.

well they need to do something, anything, I don't care what. Two ticky tack fouls in the 1st quarter should not send LeBron or Kobe to the bench yet it does. It's ridiculous how much these no-call fouls impact the game.

    I agree with Battier's idea.

I also would like the idea of coaches' being able to challenge certain calls with instant reply, like the NFL. If a team loses the challenge, they lose a full timeout. Also, the league can set a limit in challenges, though it would cut down on some of phantom calls.

There's no harm in that, I would love to see some like Joey Crawford have his calls overturned, like 95% of time.

Well judging by most NBA players reaction they don't want to be called for fouls either.
