This doesn't solve Gundy's main gripe, which is how ticky tack fouls change the game. Once a certain player gets 6 fouls, the opponent would be all over him trying to get him to foul someone, so the oppposing team gets 2 balls and possession. Having your opponent get two shots and ball possession isn't really all that different from getting your player fouled out.

The argument: "Fouls are part of the game. You have to just play better defense." doesn't really address the issue.

Yeah, its part of the current game. JVG is arguing it would be a better game without it. He probably doesn't like how the rules of the game are titled towards the offense, and that there are so many touch fouls. He used to coach Yao, and his bother coaches Dwight Howard. This isn't an unexpected view from him.

I think he has a point, but fouls would undoubtedly increase and the games would probably be slower as a result. Yeah, fans want to see the best players on the floor at the end of the game, but they also don't want to see a foul-line parade.

The problem isn't the rule itself, but how the referees apply it. Unfortunately, I don't see the rule or the refs being changed any time soon.

So up the number of free throws once a team goes into the penalty each quarter. Fifth team foul = two free throws, 7th team foul + three free thows etc.

I always thought the best way to discourage fouling would be by giving the fouled team a bigger advantage offensively instead of penalizing the defensive team...and the fans.

    fixed

But I will add that I think this is the best way to go. No coach is going to risk having the opposition get three foul shots every time there is a foul. Or maybe make the rule so that on the 7th team foul (or whatever number you like) the best free throw shooter on the team gets to shoot the team's free throws on all on non-shooting fouls. So if someone wants to hack-a-Shaq they can't do it forever because at some point it becomes Mo Williams shooting his free throws.

I like the idea of giving the other team two free throws and the ball on a players 6th+ foul and letting the player stay in the game. This way, it's a gamble to leave him on the floor with his foul situation yet it gives the team the option to leave him in.

I also don't think you would see that much difference if they took away fouling out. Once a team goes into the penalty they aren't going to just hack away.

I love the foul-out rule. It would completely change basketball to get rid of it. JVG is nuts on this one.

You offer another suggestion that is much better than JVG's crazy idea.

I don't think getting rid of "fouling out" will really mean people will now foul significantly more. Sure you don't have to sit, but giving up 2 FTs in a league in which those are made at about a 75% clip is not a good outcome in a possession anyway.

Same was said about 3 pointers.
At first they began to trickle in . . until at one point
it seems some folx took more of them than 2 ptrs
    then it settled down a bit . . .so . . . I figure a increase over time
then it will find its equalibrium

well, if you got into foul trouble early on the game, a coach leave in that player in the bench, for 5-10 minutes depends on how much time is left in the game.

5 mins its almost half a quarter, in hockey 5 mins its only a bit

if you get rid of the rule completely you will start seeing a lot less field goals and a lot more ft's

Van Gundy during the game did say his idea for "1 more foul" instead of mentioning complete removal of the rule. He also says that in the article. The main point is to be more generous on the foul rules cuz the current way might be a little bit too restrictive. Thats a sound subject to debate.

They can give starting players 7-8 fouls and keep bench players at 6. Simply favor the starting players that fans want to see instead of thinking of ways to eliminate them out the game.

NBA Summer League ball has 10 fouls instead of 6. Besides the lack of talent and preparation time, there can be some really sloppy games. But its what Van Gundy is talking about, you get to see John Wall or your prized prospects stay in the game.

I wonder how it'd effect FLOPPING, would it make it worse, would make it better? Would referees start calling more fouls on the flopper? Would it stop players from doing the shameless acting jobs to get some cheap calls on the star players? Would it make taking charges more or less likely? Would floppers with an extra foul to give try to use it for even more acting jobs?

maybe he'd learn how to shoot free throws though... or he'd sit.... which is the scenario that Van Gundy is trying to avoid. Better one Shaq sit than...

I like the idea of players not fouling out, but allowing teams to either pick the free throw shooter or adding a technical foul shot for each foul on a player after his sixth.

Oh course he would. He'd just throw a Van Gundy free throw party the whole game.

I thought is comment last night about how there should be a "most improved official" award named after Steve Javie was awesome.
