S Jackson is tall and strong enough to play the 3--he is more a legit starting 3 than either A Griffin or Pike. Barry and Harris have even less potential to matchup with most 3's than Pike does. Jackson is also much younger than all these guys and is a better defensive presence than all but A Griffin (and isn't completely worthless offensively unlike Griffin). If we landed SJ for the remaining half the MLE for however long he wants that would turn a dissappointing offseason into a positive one. We need a legit starting 3 (via FA or trade) or vet banger 4 far more than we need another back-up PG or SG.
all these deals sound nice.. making a trade or just signing a 3 outright.. BUT, what IF BOKI is a BAD MOFO.. you know? Francis was saying in an interview or something last year that they had 3 point contests.. and Boki would hit 15 3's in a row-nothing but net.. and ive seen videos.. this guy can penetrate and really throw down on people.. so i say just wait and see how he turns out.. i personally think he will be ok.. just needs to hit the wieghts a bit.. If it doesnt work out.. a mid-season trade will be the frist thing to happen!!
Best is gone. Just signed with the Mavericks who have plugged their backup PG hole...unlike the Rockets who still have the Moochie factor to deal with.
Forgive me codell but I simply don't get the feeling that there will much, if any, improvement from EG this year. He's looking more like our very own version of Kwame Brown as the years pass by.
This is the first person i was hoping the Rocks would go after, besides Posey oh well, maybe M. Jackson then.....
Hillboy, I have to admit, I am somewhat skeptical of what kind of force EG can become. And I am basing that on his attitude and not his skills. I think everyone can agree that he has the tools to be a 14/9/3 type of PF, which would be about what we need from the 4. I can't help but get the feeling that Eggie has some serious demons, and not just basing that on his drug history. The only hope we can have at this point is that his natural maturation (my word of the day) will help offset this, if indeed his head is his problem. I think next year is his make or break year. Either he shows some measurable improvement, or we trade him away or make him a 10-20 min backup and give Mo a shot at playing 30+.
I heard the interview as well. One thing stood out for - Coach JVG's assesssment of Boki's summer camp stood out. JVG classified or qualified Boki's summer league game as DISSAPOINTING. Interesting I started thinking within myself - would Rudy have said the same thing about his player in any interview. I bet he would have sugar coated it. I am a really big Boki fan but I really enjoyed hearing JVG candidness on Boki. JVG also said he stated to Boki his feelings and specifically told what he needs to do to improve (i.e. strength). This means that "loofs" Eddy, Cato and Moochies will alwasy get it straight. Also Francis and Mobley will not have any excuses for their ocassional brain firts. Yao will not have Rudy babying him as well. Welcome to Houston once again JVG.
I would like to know everybody's opinion on who will end up being the 12th person on the roster. I think the Rockets will pick the best player available at either the 1,3,or 4 spot.
JVG is just what the Rox needed...A new attitude and refreshed outlook on where there headed... Go Rox!!!
yao cato mo eddie nachbar rice adrian pike cat steve mooch we have to have another big man, preferably a 7 footer, and we won't get much for our money. Cherokee Parks
IMO, Parks for 1 year at ~$1m is an absolute steal. The guy can play both PF and C, has more of a postup game than Cato, a decent mid-range faceup J and is fundamentally sound...only 279 TO's in nearly 7,400 career minutes. No, he's going to blow anybody away with his athleticism but Calvin is going to have some great one-liners every time Parks gets into a game. As odd as it sounds, Parks has actually played in 7 playoff games (55 total minutes).
GATER, I haven't looked at their stats closely but the low turnover rate may simply be because he hasn't exactly been the umm... focal point of offenses.
DoD - The focal point comment could also be applied to Kelvin Cato. Except that Parks has 4 more career TO's.. in nearly 500 more minutes. For perspective, Parks turns the ball over far less frequently than Ostertag in a Utah offense that wasn't designed for taking risks.
On a serious note, why sign Parks at all. He brings absolutely nothing to the team. He is not a banger, not a good rebounder and perticularly good at anything. MoT is much better at Power Forward as either the starter or back up and Cato is much better at the center. I would prefer to bring in a big physical player that is not going to demand a lot of minutes but when he is in the game will throw his muscle around such as Kevin Willis or Charles Oakley. Not arguing the point that 1 million a year would be a good price for Parks but like I used to tell my wife, "just because its on sale does not mean we need it and money spent on things we don't need is just money thrown away."
we have only 4 guys to play 2 frontcourt positions, leaving us very vulnerable in the event of injury to any one of them. We need a 5th big man to fill the deep bench role, and Parks is about as good we will get.
Oh, I'm not arguing in favor of Cato or Parks. I don't know enough about Parks' game to comment. I'm just thinking this is one of those "reach" stats... lol. They both average well under a turnover a game. They both probably shouldn't have the ball in their hands if it can be helped. It's like saying we both have to run a marathon, you're 2 feet into the race and I'm 4 feet into the 26 mile race so I'm winning. Umm... and?
