JVG was a good regular season coach but a poor playoff coach. His "win now" philosophy ultimately did him in. Not trying to develop backup options off the bench really hurt. Our stellar regular season D got torched by the Jazz and we never could make the adjustments to stop it. If management feels this team should at least make the semis or even WCF, then they needed to let JVG go. I can't say Adelman will do any better, but it's obvious that JVG really couldn't do anymore than he's already done.
It's hard to say really who is at fault with this team's post season demises in the past 4 years. JVG was a good coach, whose track record spoke for itself and so did his post season record. However, I think a change is needed just for the sake of change. If Adelman is our coach, so be it. Just don't throw JVG to the curb for a ****ing scrub coach. The bottom line is we still need upgrades at PG and PF, that we may not be able to obtain for a while with our cap situation being what it is. Hopefully we can make some sort of trade or find a diamond in the rough with the upcoming draft to change that. We also STILL need that coveted backup for T-Mac and a 3rd scorer. We really really need a 3rd scorer to distribute the quadruple teams that T-Mac and Yao get on a nightly basis. Wells was supposed to be the savior when it came to that department and the perfect backup to T-Mac. Wells was not. T-Mac? You said this was on you and you failed again. Granted, you could argue you didn't have the players to get past a very tough Utah Jazz team. However, this doesn't excuse the fact that you failed to get us out of the playoffs once again. I was listening to a 610 radio call the other day and one fan (granted he was a moron you could tell in everything else he said) made a point about you. He said, you don't have that "it", that "fire" to lead a team. You know what? Until proven otherwise, I'm starting to agree with that delusional fan. Above all, we need a ******* bench. Therefore, when our starters are gassed from say, playing 48 minutes a game, we can actually give them a break. This wasn't as dramatic as the Rudy firing, but it's still always sad to see coaches go and Van Gundy is no different. I just hope Adelman or whoever isn't immediately hailed as the savior of this franchise when they take the reins. Remember, JVG isn't out there shooting the ball. JVG isn't out there with our paper thin bench or the cause of the Rockets having ONE point guard (that shouldn't be a starting pg) capable of demanding any playing time. JVG also isn't out there playing PF with us and failing to grab key rebounds when it counts because Howard is a joke. Here's to a new Rocket's era and hopefully one with some personnel changes on both sides of the fence, coaching and the players. I'm done.
I am GIDDY !! I can't help it ! I am excited about this off season now more than the last 4. I believe that JVG -while a good coach- was completely wrong for this cast of characters. Now this off season is going to be fun to watch. What will Les do? Who will be back as players? Will V-Span stay? Will Deke stay? Will the Rockets trade Tmac, Battier or Yao? What will Morey do to reshape the roster and make them more competitive. Man, I can't wait. DD
JVG will definately be missed. He was a hard-working coach that had the respect of the majority of his players. Hopefully Vspan will stay now and if we get Ricky maybe Bonzi will comeback as well.
It steams me that fans actually think Grumpy was an offensive moron. I am very convinced he could spell fast break, motion offense, and triangle... dude was a basketball genius. Just need a real power forward and another scoring option....
we'll see soon enough, i guess. i look at the roster and can't imagine how in the hell they plan on playing adelman's style of hoops.
How was that fast breaking team he had in New York? Come on Rhester....the guy was a maniacal control freak who adhored mistakes and turnovers. This team needs a coach who will give the players a bit more freedom, and then you will see better ball...... DD
the worst thing that could happen is that the rockets lose in the first round and play a muh more entertaining style of basketball
His kings teams were dramaticly more talented than the rockets currently are too. Likewise with Portland when he had Strickland, Buck Williams, Clyde in his prime, ect. Again, we didn't even make it out of the playoffs the 4 years prior to JVG, and Yao is the only player left from those "rebuilding years". This is the only year we were favored to win in the first round and that was a bit of a misnomer considering it took a massive choke job by Utah to get home court by 1 game and Utah had a winning record vs us in the regular season. Any way, I hope we can improve under Adelman or who ever they hire. I just don't consider it a "sure thing" the way many of the JVG haters here do.
Oh, I won't pretend, but I reserve the right to blast him if and when he starts sucking. And correct me if I am wrong, but Adleman has not been hired, right? DD
yes!! just turn it over to v-span and your problems will be solved!!! free chuck hayes!!! free rafer alston!!! these guys are the kinds of guys that lead you to rings if you just let them be!!!
Unless we get some quality men, I'm still not convinced that this team will improve anymore under Adelman then when they were under JVG. However, I do think a change was needed.
unless our talent changes, the playoff results will not be any different. this is one of those "LES" moves. it gives people a reason to believe that we can win with a new coach. this is about selling tickets, not finding the best coach. in the end, adleman can do no better with the current rockets squad. here's to hoping the talent gets better this off-season...
Dude! Haven't you heard? Adelman is soooooo much better a coach than JVG because he will single-handedly remove those chains JVG placed on the Rockets and free up all of that vast untapped offensive talent (particularly in Spanoulis) that's been holding this team back.
