Van Gundy dismissed as Rockets coach

    By JONATHAN FEIGEN
    Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle

Jeff Van Gundy was dismissed as Rockets coach on Friday, less than two weeks after the Rockets' first-round loss to the Utah Jazz.

After initial ambivalence about returning to the team as coach, Van Gundy had made his desire to be back clear. The Rockets, however, had already begun an extensive interview process with former Kings, Warriors and Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman who is considered the only candidate to replace Van Gundy.

Van Gundy had told the Rockets that he would not object to the team looking into its coaching options.

On Thursday, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey offered Van Gundy another position with the team, expected to be in a consulting role.

Van Gundy was 430-318 in 11 seasons as an NBA coach, 182-146 in four seasons with the Rockets. He has a 44-44 postseason record, losing in the first round to the Lakers in 2004, the Mavericks in 2005 and the Jazz this season. Their trip to the 2004 post season was their first since 1999. The Rockets' 52-win season this year was their best since 1996-97

What a way to break in my first thread on the GARM

JVG gone, bring in Adelman. It will be an interesting summer to see what personel moves the Rockets make to shift from a JVG type team to an Adelman type team.

Best Wishes Jeff. I really enjoyed you being our coach, you have a great personality and you always called it like you saw it. You just didnt get us over the hump we needed offensively.

    Thanks for everything.

Good luck, JVG. You're a good guy and a good coach. Just not for this team.

BTW, this thread is about to BLOW UP.

Well, 790AM is absolutely blasting the dismissal of JVG. I can't believe what I'm hearing from them. I'm so disappointed with the hosts De Luca and Lopez, but it's all there is to listen to sadly.

I'm optimistic about next year and ready to see how it works.

Thank you Jeff. You did a lot for this team. You took a team with no real direction and little hope for the future and made a force out of it. (Of course, the talent upgrades certainly helped.) You bought tickets for the Rowdies and made the Toyota Center fun. It's a shame that the team wants to get rid of you because of a 4-point loss, but that doesn't take away from what you've done. Best of luck to you in whatever you do. If it's basketball, your next employer is in for a treat.

This is the best move for the team. Even though I liked JVG, he had 4 years for us to progress in the playoffs and he did not. I do not see Jeff improving his coaching on offense or ever playing rookies (save being forced to by injuries).

I wish JVG the best, but this had to happen.

Exactly. I really like JVG, think he's a good coach and wish him nothing but well, but I really do think it is time for a new coach, a fresh system and new philosophy of building around the stellar core that we already have.

It's why I suggested the move of Howard for Vladimir Radmanovic/Lakers second rounder. It's not a move i'm crazy about but Adelman has had great success coaching players of that mold and getting the most of them.

we should have had more playoff success. i care about the team, not the coach. hopefully we find one that can help us take the next step.

Grumpy, you are a good coach, you earned my respect.

TMac, it's on you. I don't expect the next coach to carry the team.
