Man, all I wear in the summer is jorts. Of course, I work at a university in an engineering department. The only rule is that we have to dress better than the students. If I shower twice a week, I satisfy that rule. We've got one TENURED faculty member that rocks the cutoffs all year long. When it gets hotter, the length gets shorter and shorter. This time a year, we're talking Daisy Duke cutoffs. And this guy easily makes six figures.
wow, I didn't even know the word jorts existed a few minutes ago. To be frank, I've got no problem with "jorts" as clothing - I have a problem with the WORD Jort. Jean. Shorts. - It's two syllables. It's not that hard to say. It tells you what the thing is in two simple utterances. Why, why, why, why would you shorten it to something that sounds like it came from a bad sci-fi movie? Jorts? What the hell? I think there should be a brotherhood of men who walk around in jean shorts just pimp-slapping the hell out of people who use words like "Jort". "Good afternoon good sir, those are lovely jorts you're wearing this autumn day" *SLAP* "That's shorts, jean shorts; you lazy b*stard."
It is like you went into my brain and came out with what I wanted to say about this topic but only more eloquently than I could have done myself. For this I thank you, herr zookeeper.
Hey Baqui99, Does your tech department(or company) allow you'll to wear shorts to work? I'm asking because, where I work, you come wearing jorts or shorts to work...your going home buddy. That might even be grounds for termination. That's just asking for problems. The problem is, if you let the employees dictate the dress code by going around what their supposed to wear(as written in their employee handbook or whereever), then you get what you have now...which goes from business casual to just casual. I once knew this cantonese woman, who worked in the same group as me in the tech department, and she used to wear a jogging outfit to work. I couldn't believe it. This is a professional company with a business casual Friday and she's wearing a jogging outfit. Sure, it's comfortable but she looked like crap and just shouldn't have been doing it for any reason. Maybe that is why we are so strict about the subject now. People will always fail to obey the guidelines unless there are enforced repurcussions. Yea...it's amazing what some people will wear to work.
damn, you guys are lucky with all your casual wear. Where I work, its basically suit and tie each day. Once, I decided to just wear a suit with no tie, and my co-workers started calling me "the rebel." If I was forced to wear a jort to work, I probably would never show my face at work again.
I used to have this awesome pair of khaki shorts that I loved and it was the only pair I needed. Then one night I made the fateful mistake of wearing them to a GWAR concert, and they were absolutely ruined by the fake blood. I still wear them to take out the trash 'n stuff and it looks like I was disemboweled. I had a buddy once that had these Abercrombie khaki shorts that our circle used to always razz him about in high school because we were metal dudes and opposed to anything popular. Then we went to Ozzfest and Phil Anselmo of Pantera was wearing the EXACT SAME shorts. It was a triumphant day for my boy. As far as jorts, well, I got nothin'. That **** went out with Hammer pants.
Shouldnt have had to say anything else after that.....I also work with NERDS and this is the way it is every place I go...I hate it even more when people will stay at work and code for more than 32 hours and never go home to take showers...
You also have a fiancee that is willing to look past your glaring flaws. BTW, great thread Baqui. I needed a good Sunday morning laugh since I's stuck at work until 3. So, what about the jean jacket? I'm starting to see people wearing those around again. Are we entering the age where 80's threads are the thing? While the jean jacket thing isn't all that bad, god forbid women start wearing leg warmers and guys sport the headband again.
The Jort Jacket has made it's way around my office. I have two ladies that wear them. In fact I had one ex-employee and one current employee that on occassion wear OVERALLS! Seems like women can get away with dressing much more down than men! Where has the professionalism gone? I could do without denim at the work place frankly. As far as I am concerned, business casual STARTS with khaki type pants and a polo. Anything below that is too casual as far as I am concerned.
Man, it's a sad day when the first thing you wake up to in the morning is a thread documenting a large rabble of people who spend a significant amount of time posting on an internet message board that have serious issues with your chosen casual method of dress. I love jean shorts (thank you, Pued. It needed to be said. Jort is a god awful word), and to hell with you all, especially those of you in the jury. Oh, and KingCheetah, you are the master of all picture postings.
I wear jean shorts for the simple fact that I'm tall (6'6") and I have a hard time finding khaki shorts that fit me. Hell, if it weren't for that court order, I wouldn't wear jean shorts either. Apparently indecent exposure falls under the "Three Strikes And You're Out" law though. Bastards.
Boy, Deuce, you and I are on the polar end of the spectrum on this one. I HATE (and that is a strong word, but I mean it) office attire. I have no interest in khakis or button downs or any of that crap. If I wanted a uniform, I'd work at Arby's. I also cannot stand bad suits. I say "bad" because most office suits are bad because they are a necessity, not something worn for fashion. A nice suit worn for the fashion value is always great, but just the standard office slacks and blazer - yuck. Mostly, I intensely dislike traditional dress shoes. Bo-frekin'-ring. I really like shoes in between dress and sneakers like Steve Madden or Kenneth Cole stuff that has the basic feel of a dress shoe but the markings of a sneaker. Last, but definitely not least, I hate tucking in shirts. I can't stand it and absolutely refuse to do it under all circumstances. It is one of my great pet peeves I guess, so I always buy shirts that are squared off at the waist and can be worn un-tucked or I go with a more casual look. There is no question I like nice clothes. If I were rich, I'd probably own a crap load of clothes. Part of this is born out of being a musician and always having an eye out for things that would look cool on stage. But, I want them to also be a part of my daily wardrobe. So, I try to find ways to mix that creative thing with everyday business. Obviously, it helps to own your business and for it to be in a relatively creative field. People expect you to sort of go your own way, which is nice. When all else fails, a pair of cargo shorts, a t-shirt with a smart ass message on the front and a pair of sneakers will do just fine, thank you very much.
