Jay Z has been mainstream for 10 years and if he ever had street cred it was a long time ago. Just thought I would point that out.

He hasn't broken any record in sales that I know of but I think he has the most #1 albums or something.

...and news flash everyone, nobody cares about street cred. The success of Kanye West and some of the newer artists (like Kid Cudi and Drake) pretty much proves that this was just some dumb term blown out of proportion by the media.

    He probably loves this publicity...

I like Jay's earlier stuff, but I've grown tired of him lately. There is no doubt that he is one of the best of all time, but I think he should have stayed in retirement. Maybe focus on producing, fixing RocNation or something.

To his credit, he can still put some good stuff together, especially with Alicia Keys or MJB in the background.

    He's adopting Beyonce's snotty behavior...that's what's annoying.

I just listened to it, or through the first chorus. What a horrid song. Aren't there supposed to be people writing songs for her?

    Noddin' my head like 'Yeah'
    Movin' my hips like 'Yeah'
Turning this S**T off like 'yeah'

Because I was rather young when the Illmatic came.. Around 4 years old?

I'm talking about recent albums. Obviously the Illmatic is arguably the best album ever.

DMX and Hilary Duff were reportedly at odds over the direction of the music industry, but it wasnt confirmed...

"Street Cred", like "Keep It Real", had its time, place and intentions. Street cred isnt anything recent, rappers have been always about trying to be "hard". I think the term was carried more by the rap industry, then media afteward. Hardcore rappers were making all the rap money. Of course to retain it they had to talk up their brand of rap and talk down on the softer stuff.

Once white people who mostly buy rap music figured out they have influence on rap, hardcore rappers had to go "underground" and mainstream rap became less gritty.

I think THIS BBS is the proper place to ask Jay Z's opinion though.

Rappers have always had a confident even cocky mentality. If they rap a certain way they're going to think that type of rap is the best.

Rap definitely wasn't all about street cred in the 80's, even in gangsta rap's height in the 90's there were plenty rappers who weren't thugs (ll cool j, Outkast, tribe called quest, de la soul, etc.) and people listened to them. The point I was trying to make is that Jay Z isn't popular because of "street cred". People like or liked his music. The media blew that term out of proportion. They starting insinuating that a rapper needed some kind of "street cred" to be successful. This just isn't true, never has been.

I gotcha, well said. Splitting hairs, we're saying the same stuff but from different viewpoints. Yours is the consensus viewpoint, saying as a whole rap music gets listened to cuz of the music and not street cred. I agree, or want to agree.

My opinion's the same but from the viewpoint of a particular demographic of listener, the street cred-centric group of listeners and rappers and themselves who value that. They're still out there but arent nearly as influential anymore in mainstream music. Cuz its just dumb and unsustainable. We're not getting albums with "Nas Escobar" anymore. Thats both trying to boost street cred, and at the same time playing to obvious marketing which ironically LESSENS the street cred from coming off a bit contrived. So yeah just shut up about what rap "should" be, make the music good and listeners will decide.

Jay-Z is a pussee, there I said it and would like to be quoted for accuracy in the future.

I grew up in Brooklyn, know bedford stu, he never did any of the things he claims to have done. He was always a low level thug / phony imatator who had only one skill that is take the life and events of others and pass them as his own. He is really good at make belief based on stolen anecdotes from people he met.

Anyway this man is a terrible liar who stole most of his material from the late great Notorious and now walks around pretending like he is the godfather of rap music. Nas was right in exposing this phony gangsta and his stupid fake life that never existed.

His music is just terrible mainstream pop all the suburban kids love cause they have no idea about the reality of living in a poverty struck depressed neighborhood of Brooklyn. They love him cause his fake stories impress them into believing they can relate to his imagined world.

Don't waste time and money buying another Jay-Z album.
