People who worship Kobe seriously...and I mean SERIOUSLY....need to check themselves. I can see you admiring his skills, but worship? What has he done to deserve worship? However, not to derail the thread, I just watched 5 minutes of Jay Leno and that will be it for me this lifetime. Ugh.
I'm speaking in generalizations, not overgeneralizations. Of course there will be exceptions everywhere you go. I only brought this up to explain why Jay could maintain a large late night audience over the years in comparison to comedic geniuses like Letterman and to an extent Conan. In my opinion I think a lot of Americans don't judge a person based on ability, but more on relatability. That's why this is a business first, pleasure second nation. And when you don't have that passion for things outside of your direct comfort zone (which is easily established because America provides plenty of opportunities to it's people), you kind of steep in ignorance and won't let yourself enjoy true genius or embrace culture; you'll merely want to bring it down to your level. Plenty of exceptions, I am just speaking on the majority. I won't go into Kobe because I already created a thread on that.
Indeed. The late great Johnny Carson will always be The King of Late Night. I'm a big Letterman fan and always thought he should have had the Tonight Show, but I'll be surprised if the network pulls the plug on Leno. Compared to one of the dramas you wish they had instead, Leno's show is cheap. I think it'll last longer than a year, unless the ratings are so bad that Leno quits.
The best thing about the Jay Leno Show tonight is what's right after the show: Dominique Sachse's beautiful white dress.
OMG, we get it. You think people in America are ignorant because they don't watch the programs you watch, or listen to the same music, or watch the same movies. I left out books because I am absolutely certain that you read nothing of true importance. And no, neil gaiman is not literature.
How can anyone not be a fan of this? <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Bmk9CjEha8A&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Bmk9CjEha8A&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/87soTsQjf5Y&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/87soTsQjf5Y&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Conan is a naturally talented comedian and gifted conversationalist. Leno needs his writers to hand feed him bland material that he can barely deliver adequately. And his interviewing skills leave a lot to be desired. He's dull and the master of the awkward moment.
Conan has a cringe worthy monologue, the only show with a worse one is Fallon and that is pretty much the worst you can get.
Conan's monologues are not his strengths I have to admit. But then again, I don't find any of the current talk show hosts's monologues really can't miss drop dead funny material. It's not like I'm expecting Chris Rock Bigger and Blacker type of LMAO material.
I wish I could find this on utube. But Conan once asked Larry King what it takes to be a good talk show host and Larry said something to the effect that he always makes the guest the center of the interview and only chimes in when it is necessary to move the conversation along. In the segment, you could see Conan visibly taken aback by the comment because basically conan does the opposite. Larry then goes on to observe that a large portion of conan's audience would be watching the show because of conan and not the guest, that the guest doesn't even matter. To say that conan is good at interviewing is to wallow in ignorance. Conan has a schtick. You like that schtick, end of story.
point taken. for the record, i am a huge conan fan and never watched leno except his jaywalking bits, so i'm not here to defend his comedy. i just get prickly when people use words like 'true genius' and accuse others of being unable to enjoy it. genius, especially when it comes to something like art and entertainment, is so subjective. to me, there's no real difference between leno fans not enjoying conan and conan fans not finding leno funny; it's not really an indictment of either crowd's ability to appreciate genius. i think it's much fairer to simply say that different people have different tastes than to dismiss one group of people as less cultured. now if leno were running fart jokes as his monologue then yeah...i'd say we have a problem.
I agree with this. However, I don't disagree with Conan's approach. I find that celebrities usually have nothing interesting to say. So the interjections actually make interviews more watchable, not less. I can understand using Larry King's approach if it's a serious show. Or if the guest have serious issues they wish to talk about. But for a late night entertainment show, entertaining the audience should be the biggest factor. It's not like the guests there are doing anything but plugging their newest movie/tv show/book/etc. anyway.
Wait..what ? Are you Scottish or something? Ferguson is terrible. His character was funny on the Drew Carey Show but that's where it ends. Conan is the best. Period.
