I really could not care less about this story. The Bears are boring to begin with..and I find this story equally boring. I can't believe it's generated the conversation and buzz on the 24 Hour Sports News Network that it has....which is only further proof that it's a slow time of the year for sports news.
Just in case anyone is interested, this is an article (a tad long) from someone who covered Cutler going back to Vandy.... http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=rivals-1180229 Pretty much ends up with the same question I have, what's he done that's merited the massive pile up.
It mostly comes from this article from earlier. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=6017986 Ever since I read that I always considered him a douche.
Anecdotal examples from his first few years in the league have shaped your view for good? I'm not saying those examples weren't true but people tend to grow up over time. By the way, what in that article is so damning exactly when we've got players littered through the NFL with criminal situations? Even if he hasn't grow up, which I haven't seen any example of during his time with the Bears, is he really deserving of the kind of venom sent his way?
It's pretty much well-established that Cutler is a douche, but the person who annoys me the most in this whole situation is Trent Dilfer. I'm sick of watching him come on ESPN and talk about leadership, and what it takes to be a great QB in this league when it's absolute common knowledge that he was the worst QB to ever win a Super Bowl. The guy was mediocre to bad his ENTIRE career, and now because he has a ring (thanks to his team having the single best defense in the history of the NFL), we 're supposed to listen to him spout off like he knows what he's talking about?? Give me a break. If it was Steve Young, John Elway, Dan Marino, or even Boomer Esiason, I would listen.....but Trent Dilfer needs to STFU, and be thankful those other QBs I just listed don't give him swirlies and atomic wedgies when the camera is off. And the way Maurice Jones-Drew is backpeddling, he might look into converting in a cornerback.
He can't backpeddle since he was injured and caused the Jags to miss the playoffs. Wait, what were his complaints on Cutler again??
just because he's not affable and detests publicity doesn't make him deserving of all this criticism.
If you have some time read the article in link I posted after that, makes even less sense. Look I know I've been going on about it but the whole thing just drive me a bit nuts as a fan of the team, esp when I can't find any real basis for the treatment. I mean as soon as the game ended on Sunday, Jimmy Johnson and Howie Long jumped into questioning Cutler's leadership........for getting hurt.
Which of his co workers have come out and railed on him? Lynch? Because of a minor thing during his rookie year?
none of his coworkers (i.e. Bears organization) are questioning his "toughness" or "leadership". it's everyone else behind a computer, desk, and microphone. i'm not even a fan of the guy but can't help but feel he's being crucified for no good reason.
Have to take Cutler's side here as well. He's obviously not the most charming personality in the world, but that in itself is not a crime. In essence, if you were to really ask the people throwing Cutler under the bus now why they do so, it would boil down to this: "I just don't like that guy." And that's the thing with people. We easily judge other people just because we don't like them, and we fashion indictments against them out of spite. Similarly we easily overlook other people's faults and real transgressions because they're likable and endearing. In the end though, it's always wrong to condemn someone outright without having an appreciation for what it's like to be in their shoes. On a side note, it's striking how similar this is to what happened to Tracy McGrady in Houston. (Of course, these days fans will instantly say "TORONTO!" when his name comes up, but we all know he was railroaded long before that by fans and media in almost the exact same manner, for the same reasons.)
When Cutler came out of the game, did he ever go to the locker room? Did he ever change out of his uniform? The reason I ask is because usually when players suffer severe injury they are taken back to the locker room and are kept off the sidelines or change into street clothes because they know there is no chance they are going back into the game. I think everybody may have jumped the gun based on that simple fact.
You mean this Olsen? No, Cutler is well aware of what his public image is. He simply has decided not to work on it. Again, that’s his call. But his teammates shouldn’t be surprised others see him in a different light. ‘‘We’re the only people who are around him enough,’’ tight end Greg Olsen said. “Everyone else on the outside forms their opinion based off nothing, pretty much. They don’t know him. They’ve never really spoken to him in an informal setting. So it’s kind of interesting sometimes to hear people who’ve never met someone talk about how they know exactly what they are.’’ The fact that this is a conversation late in Cutler’s second season in Chicago would indicate it’s still an issue. ‘‘Everyone in the locker room knows him,’’ kicker Robbie Gould said. ‘‘Everyone understands the type of guy he is. Everyone knows he’s a great teammate. Everyone knows he’s a great guy. Everyone knows he has a lot of talent. ‘‘I think a lot of people, especially in the city of Chicago, whether it be the media and other fans, give him a bad rap because he’s a quiet guy. He might not be the most outgoing guy, but he’s a great guy to have on our team.’’ http://www.suntimes.com/sports/morrissey/3281297-419/cutler-image-guy-jay-everyone.html
He went to the locker room a bit before halftime. He came out and tried to play the 1st series of the 3rd quarter. He couldn't plant and his only throw fell short. He didn't play after that.
Drew Brees played the first 6 weeks of the season with a MCL sprain/tear. Philip Rives had ACL surgery the week of a playoff game. Donovon Mcnabb played on a broken ankle before. Josh Freeman as well as other QB's stated that they would have to be carted off the field if they are one game away from the Super Bowl. Jay Cutler quit.
