Unbelievable. What is your definition of CONTENDER?

    Chicago?

    Would Jason go to Utah?

Minny has Sam (Who had the best year of his career) They wouldn't be able to deal him for kid- nj would not take old sam while rebuilding.

Dallas - perhaps. But they would have kept nash (matched his deal) if they wanted to pay that kind of money.

    TRADE ACCEPTED

There were BYC players involved in this trade, so this trade is subject to the BYC provisions of the CBA. Due to Houston, New Jersey, and Cleveland being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Houston, New Jersey, and Cleveland had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out unless trade exceptions were used for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Cleveland does it so that they get a power forward and a younger center, as well as more depth and excellent role players with upside.

New Jersey does it to get rid of Kidd's massive contract and to get rid of Mourning's contract and to clear even more cap room after this season.

We do it to get Kidd. We then proceed to sign some minimum salary player at SF and some decent backup PF/C with the MLE. We would also still have part of the trade exception. Of course it would be bitter to part with Jimmy Jackson, but it's another incentive for Cleveland to do it, and he is already 34 and you have to give to get...and I don't see how else it could work cap-wise...

    Unrealistic, you say? Well...true ;)

    Houston's roster:

    PG: Kidd, Lue
    SG: T-Mac, Gaines
    SF: Griffin, someone
    PF: Howard, Weatherspoon
    C: Yao Ming, someone

    Their team president said it.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1841328

    Thorn: We're not a contender

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Nets acknowledge went from a championship contender to the middle of the pack in making a business decision to trade Kenyon Martin to Denver.

"When you lose this kind of piece, unless we get very fortunate, we are not going to be a championship contender," team president Rod Thorn said Friday, a day after dealing his All-Star power forward to the Nuggets for three future first-round draft choices.

"We fully expect to be a playoff contender," Thorn said. "But, again, I am not going to insult anybody's intelligence by saying we are going to be a championship contender without Kenyon."

Thorn and new Nets owner Bruce Ratner spent the past two weeks trying to find ways to keep Martin, a restricted free agent who was wooed by the Atlanta Hawks and Nuggets. Thorn also talked with Brian Dyke, Martin's agent, about a new contract.

However, the Nuggets forced Thorn and the Nets into a sign-and-trade deal with an offer sheet that included about $30 million in upfront money.

Had the Nets been forced to match Denver's proposed deal, it would have cost New Jersey between $45 million and $50 million next season in bonuses and luxury taxes.

If the Nets did not match the offer, they would have gotten nothing for Martin.

Thorn and Ratner also concluded that the Nets might have peaked in their championship quest with a big three of Martin, Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson and that they needed to go in a different direction. They went to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003, then lost in the Eastern Conference semifinals this year to Detroit, the eventual champions.

"When you look at it from the long range for this team, it was something we thought was the correct decision," Thorn said. "We're taking a step backwards, there's no doubt about it. But sometimes you have to take a step backwards in order to take a step forward."

Hoping to avoid a potential Martin-like problem next season, Thorn said that a contract extension for Jefferson will be discussed next month.

Thorn spoke on Thursday with Kidd and assured his All-Star point guard that he will do everything he can to keep the team competitive. His first priority will be signing a power forward.

The trade did not go over big with Martin's teammates, Thorn said.

"Kenyon was not only a terrific player, but he was a leader, he was respected in the clubhouse," Thorn said. "I don't know any player that's happy about it except maybe somebody who might get more playing time."

Thorn also asked Nets' fans to stick with the team.

"We definitely expect to remain competitive," Thorn said. "Tough decisions -- any business that you are in, you are always faced with very tough decisions from time to time. This was a monumental decision for this franchise, no doubt about it."

don't forget about the 2006 AP news article, where the Rockets can't afford to keep Yao (the bloated T-mac and Kidd contracts), so he signs with the Lakers

    ...then T-mac - again disgruntled - demands a trade

... and we are stuck with a 36 year old Kidd... who is still owed like 117 billion dollars over 18 years !

Come on, if you have Kidd, T-Mac and Yao on the same team, and Howard at PF, you sign Chucky Brown as backup PF, Kenny Smith as backup PG, Matt Maloney as backup SG, Juaquin Hawkins as starting SF, and you still have a shot at a title! :)

Kidd and Yao would be a fantastic match...

    Again. See Larry Bird rights.

We can pay Yao more than anyone else.

this is ridiculous. We aren't going to have 3 max players on our roster.

This thread is silly. It will never happen. We don't need Jason Kidd and we don't want Jason Kidd.

Our payroll right now is 49 million.

By the time Yao gets his max contract, the combined salaries of Yao, Mcgrady, and Kidd alone would equal approximately 47 million (18 mil for Kidd, 17 mil for Mcgrady, and 12 mil for Yao).

Add 9-24 million for some cheap veterans, and you have a team. You would not have a combined payroll that would exceed 71 million in that case...

The New York Knicks are at 97 million so far this season...and not anywhere close to a championship...which we would be with Yao, T-Mac and Kidd!

Anyway, I know it is not going to happen...but sometimes, a little dreaming is nice! :)

I'm not sure Houston SHOULD try to get Kidd. It would put the focus on winning the championship over the next 3 years, and then hurt us the next 3, if Kidd slows down.

    But, we could:

    1) trade Taylor to SEA for Booth/Daniels
    2) trade Howard/partial TE to CHI for Chandler/Williams/Duhon
    3) trade Chandler/Spoon/Booth/Lue/draft pick to NJN for Kidd
    4) trade remaining TE for whatever NJN wanted to send us
    5) Use MLE to get backup center

    We'd end up with:

    Yao/FA
    Williams/Padgett
    JJ/Boki/A.Griffin
    TMac/Pike/Gaines
    Kidd/Daniels/Duhon

I don't know that we need a scorer at the 4. We do need muscle and rebounding, which the Junkyard Dog is great at. I think he'd work out nice at PF.

And, would this be a good enough package for New Jersey?
There are plenty of teams who would offer better, so I don't think its realistic. At least with this offer, we are giving them some youth to build on, along with some veterans.

But, I could see these teams offering:

    Detroit: Darko/Billups/Williamson
    Indiana: Tinsley/Bender/Croshere
Clippers: Jaric/Wilcox/draft picks (save 10 mil in salary)
    Dallas: Harris/Fortson/Stackhouse
    Memphis: Williams/Swift (s&t)/Battier
    Nuggets: Miller/Tskitishvilli/Lenard
Spurs: Ginobbli/Parker/Scula (save 5 mil in salary)
Utah: Boozer/Arujeo/Snyder (save 2.5 mil in salary)

Adding Kidd makes all of these teams immediate contenders ... and I think that at least half of these deals are better than anything we could come up with, especially the Clippers.

But, would WE want to bring on Kidd and his huge contract? To be honest, I think I'd rather have the team before we made that trade, and keep Chandler and Booth. In a couple years, either Gaines and/or Duhon could be great, AND young.

    Yao/Booth
    Williams/Chandler/Spoon
    JJ/Boki/A.Griffin
    TMac/Pike/Gaines
    Daniels/Lue/Duhon/Wilks

So, is it possible? Yes. Is it probable. No.

Sherlock, we can't trade Howard and Lue while we still have the trade exception, so your trades are not possible, I believe.

SJC, I understand waiting 60 days after the Howard/Lue trade, but what are you talking about regarding the TE? How do they have anything to do with each other? I'm not saying you are incorrect, since I am not an expert on this, but I don't understand the reasoning behind your statement ...

The TE doesn't expire until Sep 30, so we'd have a month of trading time, in my understanding.

You are right...I was wrong. I thought it would expire Sep. 1.
