The fact that he could look anyone in the face and feign surprise that people who weren't involved in the development of his unworkable "plan", which will take at least four years to happen (and with conditions), in the mean time, the Palestinians lose their most holy of shrines and much of the West Bank areas that Israel had been creating settlements in, and instead get unrealistically connected (roads, tunnel? Are you serious?) disparate areas in the desert? And, involving huge amounts of money with no real designated source.

And "don't march in the streets"? seriously?

Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner said on Saturday that the borders envisioned by the Trump peace plan for Israel and the future state of Palestine are not set in stone and that the Palestinian Authority is welcome to provide input that Washington will take into consideration. “If there are things they want to change, if they don’t like where we drew the lines, they should come and tell us,” Kushner told Egyptian journalist Amr Adeeb during an interview on the El-Hekaya news show.

But in an apparent contradiction, the senior White House adviser also made clear that the US was moving forward with plans to recognize an Israeli annexation of West Bank settlements, which would limit the amount of land that will be up for negotiation. Moreover, he declared that if the PA did not agree to work with the Trump administration’s peace proposal, Israeli settlements would continue to expand, thereby making it impossible to establish a Palestinian state. “What’s been happening for many years is that Israel has been expanding as they’ve been negotiating and negotiating, and there has not been a resolution to the conflict,” he said.

Kushner claimed the Trump plan was the first time Israel had agreed to the establishment of a Palestinian state, the first time it had agreed to a map conceptualizing the land it was willing to allocate for that state, and the first time it has agreed to allowing the Palestinian state to have its capital in East Jerusalem. It was not clear what Kushner was referring to since Israeli leaders, including former prime ministers Ehud Barak and Ehud Olmert, all held extensive negotiations with the Palestinian Authority on the basis of those principles.

The Trump plan discards other painstakingly negotiated formulas in favor of manifestly unfair and unbalanced ones. Since the Clinton administration, for example, the equitable basis of all U.S. proposals for Jerusalem has been the stipulation that the Arab suburbs of East Jerusalem should come under Palestinian sovereignty and the Jewish suburbs should come under Israeli sovereignty. The Trump plan, however, puts almost all of East Jerusalem’s Arab suburbs under Israeli sovereignty, leaving to the Palestinians one Arab suburb and a refugee camp on the eastern side of the wall that Israel abandoned during the second intifada. On that sliver of East Jerusalem, the Palestinians are now told they can build their capital, severed by the wall from both the al Aqsa mosque and the 300,000 Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem.

Trump’s peace team adopted the idea of land swaps—but the plan offers arid land on the Egyptian border to compensate for the incorporation of all the West Bank settlements into Israel, including the outlying ones. The result would be a Swiss cheese Palestinian state with no possibility of territorial contiguity. Instead, the Trump plan proposes “transportational” contiguity, through tunnels that would connect the islands of Palestinian sovereignty. Those tunnels, of course, would be under Israeli control.

Even worse, the Trump plan has been presented as a diktat. Trump’s team talks as though everything were already agreed between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and all that remains is for a U.S.-Israeli team—not an Israeli-Palestinian team—to demarcate the exact lines of the predetermined Trump map

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Friedman to Lead Joint Committee on Settlement Annexation

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday that its ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, will lead the joint Israeli-U.S. committee that will discuss the Israeli annexation of West Bank settlements.The participants' goal, as Trump said, is to "convert the conceptual map" shown in the plan into a "more detailed and calibrated rendering so that recognition can be immediately achieved.”

In addition to Friedman, other U.S. committee members will include Friedman’s policy adviser Aryeh Lightstone, and Scott Leith, a National Security Council expert on Israel. Israeli members will include Tourism Minister Yariv Levin and Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer. The committee's composition was first reported on Saturday by the pro-Netanyahu Israel Hayom daily. The announcement has since been used to bolster the campaigns of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud party ahead of the March 2 Knesset election.

There is still no set timeline for when the committee will finish its work, but Netanyahu has been pressured by right-wing lawmakers in recent weeks to announce the immediate annexation of all settlements before Israelis head to the polls. Three weeks ago, both Netanyahu and Friedman said three weeks ago that Israel will be able to do so before the election, and Netanyahu planned to turn this issue into the cornerstone of his re-election campaign.

The plan to announce the immediate annexation of the settlements was put on hold after Arab states warned the Trump administration that this would force them to denounce the administration’s Middle East plan. Trump senior adviser Jared Kushner also opposed the prime minister's annexation promises, saying the administration had decided with Israel to wait until a team had been formed to examine the maps, and that he hopes Israel will wait until after the election.

Jared Kushner briefed senators behind closed doors today on the Trump administration's Middle East peace plan, White House officials tell me. Where things stand: Palestinian leaders swiftly rejected the plan last month, as expected, but Kushner told a bipartisan group from the Senate Foreign Relations committee that the international reaction was otherwise encouraging. His briefing was part of an effort to build support for the plan in Washington and overseas.

Using a power point presentation, Kushner pointed to two factors making a solution harder to reach: increased dependence of Palestinian leaders on foreign aid, and increasing expansion by Israeli leaders of settlements in the West Bank. “Kushner’s message was that every time negotiations failed the Palestinians got more money and Israel was able to keep expending the settlements, but the peace process became a false notion and didn’t solve anything. Both parties' leaderships just kept getting what they want without improving the lives of the people."

The Palestinians consider the plan a non-starter, but Kushner emphasized that there were indications it could still move forward. His case:
The two main political leaders in Israel support the plan and it didn’t become a controversial issue in the Israeli elections. There were several positive statements about the plan from Arab countries. The EU was not united in opposition to the plan.The Palestinians push against the plan stalled at the UN.

A White House official slammed the Palestinian response to the plan, telling me: "they don't have a real detailed idea of what they want."
"It has exposed the Palestinian leadership who is defending the status quo. We are moving the debate to discussing the technical challenges and the details as opposed to romanticizing about things that people know will never happen. The flipside: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, meanwhile, has denounced the plan as "an Israeli-American" effort to "put an end to the question of Palestine."
