A well reasoned post, and one that has significant weight. I will withdraw my comments.

last i checked... Hu Jintao pays state visits to Chairman Mao's mausoleum... and last i checked Mao is responsible for the war crime of slaughtering tens of thousands of Tibetan civilians (not to mention nearly 100 million of his own people thru his demented policies).

how soon we forget. and how soon we judge. we can't just all get along?

I am not afraid to admit it when I am proven wrong. Can't be afraid of failure, got to learn from it.

Wait a minute Micheon, you have to be consistent, Mao was ruthless in establishing his government.

    Do you deny that?

    Is it in Chinese textbooks?

Since Communist is still in power in China, and Mao founded the Red China. You wouldn't expect the current leader to say anything about Mao would you? History will be the judge of Mao in say 100 to 200 years. He is a egomaniac who has no idea how to run a country. Deng on the other hand, will go down in history as one of the all time great leader in Chinese history (even with the crushing of Tiananmen protesters).

If the invading japaneese army killed 1 or 30 million, it makes no different. they bruitally took the lives of innocent chineese humanbeings...this is no different to the nazi genocide. human beings are not defeined by there skin of there colour or there features. a chineese man or man who was killed and slaughterd by the merciless japaneese army, is no different to a german, poliash or a cezc jew who was killed by a german nazi officer.

Wait a minute what? Are you also siding with Mao's war crime giberish?

As of textebook, it does mention "ruthless struggle against ruling class" - although lauded as struggle of revolution, lol, and mistake of cultural revolution-although most of the blame were attributed to "gang of four".

No you shouldn't forget. Go ahead and protest. One big difference though, among others, the CCP didn't kill for fun, the Japanese did exact that, most notoriously in the Rape of Nanjing. That's what upsets the Chinese most, IMO.

From what a proffessor teaching government in China told me they do tell the students that towards the later part of Mao's life he did really mess up in governing china, ex: the red guards, the gang of four, ext, but i guess its like people try to look at the good things he did, like driving out the Japanese occupation, unifying china, and try to over look the bad things

Most died in starvation during the Great Leap Forward in the late 1950s due to Mao's economical policies and the Great Famine in the early 1960. It's incredibly stupid to suggest Mao set out to kill his people.

It was a struggle against the ruling class, which the US government refered to as a "democratic" government even though no election was ever held. Why do you think china turned to a communist government?

And Mao was to blame for the gang of four because he put them into power, I am pretty sure the Chinese people wont argue against that.

as an american, i look to the arlington national cemetary, home to our servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice, and home to eighth air force memorial.

and for those of you unfamiliar with history, that's also the mighty eighth that firebombed dresden and tokyo.

now some might say the leaders of the eighth and macarthur and eisenhower and truman who perpetrated these attacks on civilians committed war crimes. Curtis LeMay actually admitted: "I suppose if I had lost the war, I would have been tried as a war criminal."

but now would i allow some ranting ultra-nationalist germans to prevent pres. bush from paying his proper respects to the millions of our dead servicemen on veterans' day at arlington?

nah... i'd say screw 'em, which is precisely what the japanese are saying to china.

(one can make a similar case for the US soldiers in Arlington that led the campaigns against the native americans).

just a little perspective. it is just foolish to place political correctness and cultural sensitivities in the way of another people's dignity. and to use this opposition to fuel discord and hatred is even dumber. some times it is wiser to just move on and learn to get along.

it's almost like having a girlfriend who constantly brings up past my trespasses/mistakes to deny me my freedom and dignity. if i met someone like this, the gut reaction is to just slap the **** out of them.

Simple logic is always the best weapon against plain propaganda. However, many people give that up freely. Chinese population was at around 400 million when communists came to power. To suggest Mao killed 25% of total population, and then it still managed to grow to 800 million in late 80's, defies all kinds of common sense. Some don't know that Chinese population wasn't at 1.3 billion on day one. But nowadays, asking for commen sense or simple logic is always too much.
