Sigh, the one time my nationality is working against me. Why must this world be so cruel? :(

I am a little depressed, while I could register again for school, after hours of searching my family tree just doesn't have any Chinese in it.

Man, I need to go to Japan to study there. I may not be Chinese, but I can speak Chinese and look Asian.

In China, the attitude towards Japan is still quite bitter. Even the younger generation grew up with anti-Japanese TV shows and stories. Even as a foreigner, I can't really speak nicely of Japanese without just stopping the conversation.

I think in the end, you do need everyone to acknowledge the truth to start a more affable dialogue. After all, the two countries are connected heavily geographically and economically. It's really bad for both parties to continue such a standoff.

Sorry to disappoint everyone, but just read her Japanese wiki, it says this story was first put up by a HK paper, and she has since said on her blog and twitter that this story is a hoax and that her highest education is highschool.

Gender parity is still a problem, but when it comes to p*rn in some ways they are more liberal than the US I think. Sports newspapers publish large spreads of naked women, and you can see guys in the train casually reading them.

    Now there's an understatement. :)

I'm actually not sure about democracy and capitalism in Japan either. I'm not an expert, but it does seem to me that they still have many traditions that don't really fit with our western values.

There is nothing perfect about Japanese culture. I guess they're much more open about things like p*rn but overall Japan is one of the strangest cultures that I know of.

I can agree with this. From the Japanese I've met, they're very polite but just as inconsiderate.

How come our p*rn actresses don't "apologize" for....well, the list is too big.

Yea, they're SOOO open about p*rn that they still have their notorious censorship laws....

I think it's fair to say that most cultures have their own brand of weirdness. Japan being the densely populated global economic powerhouse they are, simply get more coverage and exposure in the online community than many other countries.

I know, I would've settled for a p*rn star with a masters degree, but anything lower than that is a turn off :(

I think part of the perceived difference is that being a developed country, they have the exposure that superhighfly mentions, but are more isolated culturally/linguistically than your average developed country, and have developed their own take on urban/pop culture. They have very strong media/music industries, and foreign (hollywood) programming is very rare on TV, thus they are less globalized in that sense. Another possible explanation for the perceived difference in values is the non-religiousness of the population. Most will say they are shinto/buddhist, but that usually involves going to a temple once a year to pray - that's it. So it's not surprising people from predominantly christian countries will find their values different. It's also interesting that Christianity in Japan failed to catch on the way it has in Korea and now China.
