The PRC has a very mixed view about the US presence in the Asia. While they resent what they see as a strategy designed to limit Chinese power they probably trust the US a lot more than they do Japan. The last thing the PRC would like to see is a resurgent armed Japan.

Besides the PRC and Japan not many other countries in the region want to see the US leave. The ASEAN nations certainly want continued US involvement as a counterbalance to potential Chinese hegemony in the South China Sea and no country in the region wants a resurgent Japan.

I don't really get what you are saying here either. Are you saying that the US presence is there to drum up nationalist feelings? Or that the PRC are using the US presence to drum up nationalistic feelings as a distraction from domestic problems? Are you saying that the PRC would be dealing with domestic problems without the US presence?

Nothing mixed here. PRC absolutely hates USA's presence in pacific. These are what they saw and what USA is doing:
    • using Japan and Taiwan as anti-China bases
    • giving China's islands to Japanese and Filipino
    • Starting all kinds of wars around China.
    • Funding terrorism in Tibet and Shinjiang.

A resurgent armed, independent and responsible Japan will not post more threats to China than USA, not even 1/10 of it. The last thing the PRC would like to see is a Japan being used as a tool.

You are certainly welcome to your opinion, as I am welcome to mine, and mine disagrees with yours.

Japan should be ****ting in their panties. Don't think China have forgotten the Rape of Nanking and Japan unwillingly apologize or even trying to rid of that history saying it's fake. US would not be stupid enough to get involve and China I don't think are that stupid enough to start a war. But if Japan does do something stupid they will be in for a **** storm. People should stop with this BS about China. China does not start a freaking war or get involve in one if you look at the modern history. I'm pretty sure they are a nation that are stock piling these weapons for defensive reason so that they won't be push over again like what happen during WW2 or during the British Opium Wars.

No, I was responding to pouhe's question which I think implied that the US is trying to help the Chinese people but not trying to help the Chinese government. I assume he meant to help the Chinese people by ridding them of their government.

So my point and examples are saying: that's non-sense to say that pressuring the Chinese governments in the way it's being pressured will help Chinese people in their goal of "liberating" themselves from this type of government.

I swear some Americans just don't understand that they are across the world interfering in the sovereignty of other nations, which is wrong regardless of our disagreement over the intentions.

What do the people want? Obviously the PRC does not want a more armed neighbour. Obviously the PRC doesn't trust the country that last attacked it militarily and killed so many of its people. The US leaving is not about what one semi-sovereign government and one non-representative government think.

This excuse is tragic and really really pisses off Middle Easterners and, from my limited experience, East Asians. If America leaves things will descend into chaos and anarchy lol. Whatever. Certainly, regions which have relied heavily on the US for protection and trade for so long and with semi-independence will struggly mightily at first. Just like a cocaine addict will go through chaos if they quit. But nothing less than that is good enough for American citizens, so why should it be good enough for other citizens?

Also Japan and China account for almost the entire population of East Asia.

No I'm saying out of those 3 parties, I don't necessarily believe China wants the US to remain there in its current state. I am also saying that there are more than these 3 parties involved, namely the Japanese people and the Chinese people who are to different degrees not represented relatively well by their governments.

    Again with this argument.

Would you rent out your state security indefinitely and contractually to another government if it saved you money?

You know what? WNBA is the mixed up cat if he actually believes that Chinese (both PRC and Taiwan) along with every other country in Asia will be happy with a resurgent and armed Japan. WNBA is right that the PRC is not happy with the US but given that the memory of the East Asian Co Prosperity Sphere is still raw the US is preferable to an armed Japan.

The PRC or many Chinese may not like the US much but I think they "dislike" Japan even more. Remember the Nanking massacre ?

The PRC ideally would like to see the US withdraw and Japan remain unarmed. That will never happen. As soon as the US leaves Japan will rapidly arm including becoming nuclear.
What you are missing is that East Asians aren't pissed about the US because they are keeping Japan from being armed, they love that, but for a variety of reasons dependent on the country. The PRC are pissed because they see a containment strategy geared towards the PRC, SK is pissed because the US supported a right wing authoritarian regime for decades, the Philippines are pissed because they were a US colony for 60 years and they backed Marcos. That said though all of those countries want the US to keep Japan in check and for the ASEAN nations and Japan they want the US to keep the PRC in check. The only people in East Asia that want the US to leave so Japan can rearm are Japanese nationalists.

So yes there is a lot of anger towards the US for a variety of reasons but keeping but the topic of this thread isn't one of them. Believe me I have had this discussion with people in Asia.

I will say this though as an American that I agree with you that less US involvement in the eastern Pacific would be a good thing. I don't believe a rearmed Japan will suddenly seek to re-establish the Empire of the Rising Sun and I think forcing Japan and the rest of Asia to deal with their issues without the crux or US naval power will be better in the long run. I can tell you that is a minority viewpoint.
Actually the PRC accounts for almost the entire population of East Asia. Japan's population is about 128 million or roughly a tenth of the PRC. The sheer size of the PRC alone is one of the reasons why other countries in the region are fine with continued US presence to counterbalance potential Chinese hegemony.

The article below mentions the brief hostility between the USA and China over a shot-down American spy plane, but failed to mention that in the year prior to the incident, the USA fired a missile at one of China's embassies in Yugoslavia, killing three people.

China has an inferiority complex and takes offense at any criticism by outsiders or their own people. It would be humerous if it was not dangerous.

Where you guys were wrong was you don't understand why Japan could invade the whole China so easily back then. China was at its weakest when Japan attacks. Now it's a complete different story.

What Chinese (main street) want is just to take back that islands, no one cares about if it is Taiwan that gets it or PRC. PRC gov't wants PRC get it, ROC wants Taiwan gets it. Everyone is just looking after their own benefits here. What PRC will try to do is just follow ROK's example on how ROK took back Dokdo by force no matter how many casualties, when the citizens have that kind of will, nothing can stop it except America. BTW, PRC currently has way too many young males anyway, about time to fix this issue. America is also having too much debt, time to start war to fix the economy. It will be a terrible way to go but if you can look at the issue in a cold blooded way, it's a win win to both.

Japan already stole it and being handed over by America, Japan is just trying to solidify its ownership with the islands and block off PRC access to the whole pacific in the future, which also what America wants. Again, Japan and America are just trying to maximize their benefits here.

It's not about if war regarding this dispute is going to happen, it's when; in the near future or next generation. Again, like I said before, if PRC can't take it back soon, maybe it will be end of their dictatorship. However, let me reminds you, even when China become democratic and free, don't expect this issue will go away ever.
