For historical reference: The Caning of Charles Sumner, or the Brooks–Sumner Affair, occurred on May 22, 1856, in the United States Senate, when Representative Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery Democrat from South Carolina, used a walking cane to attack Senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist Republican from Massachusetts, in retaliation for a speech given by Sumner two days earlier in which he fiercely criticized slaveholders, including a relative of Brooks. The beating nearly killed Sumner and it contributed significantly to the country's polarization over the issue of slavery. It has been considered symbolic of the "breakdown of reasoned discourse"[1] and the use of violence that eventually led to the Civil War. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caning_of_Charles_Sumner
Much ado about nada. All Trump & Co are doing is creating a playbook for future wanna be despots to follow.
Lol Nobody seriously thinks Pence will do anything but certify the election result do they. Well nobody apart from Trump.
I think the interesting 'turn of events' this week is the violent protests by MAGA. They are going from defenders of freedom to being seen as the fascist brown shirts, from supporters of law and order to reviled outlaws, from 'back the blue' to whack the blue. It may not be a majority of their backers but certainly some will be abandoning the Trump train. And maybe enough to allow sanity to win in the GOP. I think Cruz and Hawley will bee seen as traitors to democracy by more people than they think since the just live in that bubble. Losing has a way of eroding enthusiasm. The frivolousness destroys their credibility going forward.
