Dana said in the post-fight conference that Pettis will get the next title shot. ...sucks for Maynard.
It's official... Edgar's going to fight Pettis next. It was just announced at the post-fight presser.
Maynard got jobbed. He's now looking at a tune-up with another top-15 lightweight, followed by a date with the loser of the Edgar/Pettis bout. Then, assuming he wins both of those fights, he may have another shot at the title.
Fifth was close too, I think Maynard looked really bad at those take down attempts that Edgar just shrugged off. Edgar just look like he was in complete control, like a puppet master that just makes Maynard dance when he wants after the first round. P.S. I also thought Machida beat Rampage. To me controlling the fight does not equal pushing forward, it's making the other guy fight the way you want them to fight, and I thought Edgar did that rounds two through five.
That's the problem with judging in MMA, they'll give the fighter credit for controlling the fight if he is just pushing forward. Nam Phan was the victim of that when he fought Garcia. Garcia played right into Phan's hands when he kept pushing forward swinging wildly, while Nam would land counter punches. The judges saw that as controlling the fight and awarded it to Garcia.
Well, I think there are good judges that actually know how to judge a MMA fight in the North America (Nam won on one judges' card, as did Frankie), but how many times have we seen a 4:30 of stand-up won by one guy, the other guy gets one take down, does no damage, and win the fight? Or how about gets the take down right into a submission, but doesn't get tapped/get out and the round ends, and won the round because he got the submission even though the other guy was really the aggressor?
The UFC 126 card is spectacular: Anderson Silva v. Vitor (both Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts; always a pleasure to watch the world's #1 P4P and his "ballet of violence") Rich Franklin v. Forrest Griffin (2 heavy-handed brawlers standing toe to toe in the Octagon; side note: Silva dismantled both, and Vitor KO'd Rich at 103) Bones Jones v. Ryan Bader (can't wait for this one: Jones, a freak of nature, has been climbing the light heavyweight ladder quickly, and Bader's undefeated with a recent decision over Nogueira and KO of Jardine)
? Whoooo I told y'all doubters where are you now that you guys were wrong saying all that trash about the main event being a snoozer
Unfortunately for Maynard, Pettis pretty much has to fight Edgar. They have to unify those belts so that next time this happens they can have a immediate rematch. I think the next fight Maynard gets will be a #1 contender fight. The loser of the Pettis/Edgar fight is going to have to fight their way back to the title as well. Really with the acquisition of the WEC the lightweight division is too stacked to be giving guys immediate rematches imo.
Dana thought the fight was a draw. Changes his mind about Pettis getting next shot, giving Maynard the immediate rematch. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NIl8xQSq0Xs?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NIl8xQSq0Xs?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
I think the only way you can get a 10-7 round is if you beat the guy like Maynard did and the guy then commits a penalty of some sort.
Nate Quarry bagged a 10-7 when Kalib Starnes literally ran away from him like a little b**** at UFC 83. I can't recall any other 10-7 rounds, but I definitely thought Maynard's demolition of Edgar was deserving of such a score. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LjEU8pgAeL8?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LjEU8pgAeL8?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
I dislike the decision though, so now you have your other lightweight champion sitting around waiting for his shot? Maynard had his shot at the the belt, he didn't win. Bring on the next challenger. Also UFC has a damn exciting fighter in Pettis, dude is jumping off cages kicking heads off. But lol at Dana bashing the refs. I would love to hear that from Stern lol.
Dana's the MAN: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JA_6ZmiVIWw?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JA_6ZmiVIWw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Lots of good fights to look forward to as people posted earlier in the thread, but that card was way better than expected IMO. The main event was a instant classic -- I think the judges scoring was right on. I think Dana really likes that young guy from Fanhouse -- he always seems to give him really good interviews.
