You only named a couple of fights that went the distance and were actually entertaining. You'd be kidding yourself if you believed that the majority of fans DON'T want to see a fight actually being finished via KO/Submission. Why do you think there's rewards for KO of the night and submission of the night? There's no reward for "decision" of the night. Sometimes fight of the night bonus ends in a decision but it's not very common. More importantly I don't mind a fight that goes the distance but when you factor in a fight that's likely to go the distance with two guys that aren't huge draws HEADLINING A MAIN EVENT ON NEW YEARS you'd expect a bigger name. Maybe all this stems from me thinking Frankie is a bad champ. The guy's fighting style is boring, outside the cage he's unmarketable and has no charisma. Simply put there's nothing interesting about the guy. When Penn fights... people watch. When GSP fights ... people watch. When Lesnar, Rampage, Silva etc fight... people watch. Like I said I'm ordering this fight cause of Gomi/Guida and Kim/Diaz. I could care less about the lightweight title bout but I hope they put on a show and prove me wrong.
That's why when they do it's so ****ing awesome and exciting. In addition they're heavily rewarded for it with bonuses, leepfrogging other contenders etc. Nobody wants to see a Shields vs. Kampmann type of performance.
I haven't seen any of Gomi's fights aside from his loss to Florian, but I hear he has some pretty good wrestling, you just don't see it much b/c of his KO power.
I'm admittedly more of a boxing person than an MMA person, and I've made the same argument you just made above a million times about boxing matches. Just because it goes into decision doesn't make it a bad fight. At the same time, Asian Sensation is right in what he's saying about MMA decisions. Did you actually enjoy watching the Penn-Edgar fights? Either of them?
If anyone has HDNet, there is a sick MMA/Kickboxing hybrid card on in the middle of the night. A lot of huge Japanese and international stars will be fighting, along with Alistair Overeem vs Todd Duffee which should be an entertainig fight. I can't believe this is a pay per view card -- there's some good fights, but the UFC needs to start putting some of these mediocre cards on Spike or something.
Lay Praynard is going to dominate Edgar for the first 3 rounds and then will gas out a bit as Edgar outboxes him, but still win a clear decision. He is just so god damn strong, one of the most dominant top control wrestlers I've ever seen. Too bad he throws 10 punches a round.
Yeah, but do you see my point? I'm just not seeing a lot of interest in this card -- i'll watch it -- but not on PPV.
As of late...the big name cards have been boring. I bet this card has at least three fights that will have people talking on Sunday.
That's cause half the classes the champ has swept the competition. GSP needs to go up a class and fight Silva who also needs to go up after that.
The Preliminary Fights aren't going on to be on Spike this time around. For those with Time Warner Cable in Austin what channel is ION on? Because that's the channel the Prelim fights are going to be on.
