Reason 2 is that he knows his reputation is bad after leaving houston the way he did and then leaving brooklyn the way he did, he is getting clowned and he was concerned about this after the brooklyn departure, so he and the media put out stories about how he told Morey to sign "whoever and give me whats left" This made it sound like he was going to give up hundreds of millions, in reality he will have given up $15M upfront and will get a max deal going out into his later years. My guess is they are all in on this season, if it doesnt work he will ask for the super max and likely coast the rest of his career. If they are close, he may opt in another year and see how it goes, but he will still likely get his last super max then, he will get paid $50M a year until he is 39 instead of 37. This is pretty smart on his part.
