Halfway throught the season, IMO it is Harden's to lose.

Harden had had a great season statistically leading the league in assists and scoring as efficiently and proficiently as ever. He currently has a narrow lead in Win share and is second in VORP and in Box +/-. More importantly he's led the Rockets to 34-13 record third in the western conference only behind the Spurs and Warriors.

I have Kawhi Leonard 2nd as he has led the spurs to an even better 34-9 record, despite a myriad of injuries to ginobli parker and the retirement of Duncan and addition of 6 new players this season. While his advance and traditional stats arent as eye popping as Harden or Westbrook, Kawhi is 2nd in the league in PER, fourth in win shares and 6th in RPM. Add this to his game changing defensive abilities and effort and its clear, Leonard is the reason the Spurs are once again owners of one of the top 2 records in the NBA.

Third I have Westbrook. Westbrook is obviously having the best statistical year. In terms of traditional stats, He leads the league in scoring and oh he's also averaging a triple double... Advance stats? Westbrook leads the league by a WIDE margin in Box +/-, VORP & PER and is fifth in RPM. Unfortunately his team is also just 25-19 in 6th place and more than 7.5 and 9.5 games from the Rockets and Spurs.

IMO if Harden/Rockets fall out of the top 3 and into 4th or 5th, the award could justifiably go to Kawhi or less likely Durant (despite having an amazing offensive and defensive year) assuming those teams/players maintain their current performance.

I think Westbrook wins the award if he gets his team to 4th, assuming he maintain his statistical output & performance.

That's saying something from Kobe because you know how much of a fan he is of Russell Westbrook and the way he approaches the game.

Turnovers will be the one thing that can stop him from winning MVP, if Westbrook has slightly better stats, and Harden breaks the record again for turnovers, Westbrook will probably win.

Kawhi is coming on strong. If they stay close of gs and the rox fall either lower or lose significant ground you will see a strong push for kawhi. After that game against lebron it's not unjustified got to admit. Although right now it's clearly the beard. We need to stay in contact with Spurs though

Good point. If the Rockets fall back and the Spurs win several more games than Houston, Kawhi could easily push ahead. He's a dark horse candidate right now.

If Harden breaks the TO record a second year in a row, he doesn't deserve MVP.

Well neither does westbrook then too. Although I don't think he does based on how inefficient his game is

I don't think Westbrook is MVP either because his team is a lower seed. Durant, Lebron, etc. would be my next choice if Harden continues the TO record chasing.

Lol, the media wants to give it to Westbrook so bad. I could see them giving it to Westbrook even if his team finishes as lower seed.

The media will start to focus on the turnovers, that will cost Harden.

MJ would build a team around Hakeem Olajuwon, he's already on record saying that if he could pick one guy from the all time list to start a team with he would pick Hakeem.

I don't think turnovers will be the issue. Both Russ and James have TO issues so they will cancel it out.

What it comes down to is
    1) Russell Westbrook and his "triple doubles." Does he average it for the season? How many triple doubles does he get this season?
    2) Does Harden get the Assist title? Does Harden stay in the top 3 in scoring? Is Harden 1 rebound away from averaging a triple double?
    3) Where are the Thunder RANKED in the Western Conference?
    4) Where are the Rockets RANKED in the Western Conference?
    5) Media Narrative: Harden making his teammates better? Or does Harden just have better teammates than Russ....thus propelling the Rockets to the better record?

Honestly, at this point I feel like if the numbers stay like they are, it comes down to WINNING - team success. Rockets need to stay at #3 at worst. And hopefully a better record than Cleveland and be #3 overall in the NBA.

Russ Westbrooks "stats" vs James Harden's "stats+team success"

We all need to root for the Thunder to lose games.
