They always come out and dispute and criticize and then they do the work.

Let's see what happens, and hopefully the show will spur some more debate and more importantly science.

i don't think that's what these guys are saying, DaDa. i think you're misinterpreting it. they're saying the assumptions were faulty to begin with.

and a couple of people who actually participated in the event are saying that they were taken out of context...and at least one expressed anger about that.

these guys had a conclusion in mind and twisted facts to get there. that's not scientific or responsible...but they masqueraded as both.

Not having cable I didn't get the chance to see the documentary and I have no firm opinion whether this is the Christian Jesus' tomb or not but the debate is really interesting and shows how difficult it is to represent science in the media.

I know a couple of couples named John and Mary, one named Betty and Barney and even one named Ken and Barbie (though they didn't name their daughter Skipper).

I'm not sure finding the names together is that astounding.

Max was talking about the critics, not the makers of the tv show.

i understand they said that in the press conference. but it's not at all the tone of the film they made. not even a little bit.

the press conference was actually the Discovery Channel's idea when they started releasing the findings of these guys and what was to be presented, and it was getting shot down over the internet. they decided it would be best, then, to present some objective viewpoint through koppel.

did you see them get hammered on Anderson Cooper's 360?

let me ask you...what do you make of the people who were in the film now coming out and saying, "i'm angry..you took me out of context...you twisted my words." ??? what do you make of that?

I think anything controversial like this will get hammered, especially when dealing with something like Jesus and Mary were married and had a son.

People are going to FLY out of the woodwork to dispute it.....I am just keeping an open mind.

da da --- they didn't have to come out of the woodwork...they came from the very experts cited in the show who said, "come on...you can't draw these conclusions..and you manipulated my words to get there."

Your mind is so open you are ignoring the various problems that have been mentioned?

How does real scientific/historical/archaeological discussion result from a sensationalistic tv show that does a crappy job in all of the above areas? Especially when the 1996 BBC show resulted in archeologists examining everything and concluding that it doesn't hold up to all normal standards.

No doubt, but they didn't say that those conclusions are catagorically wrong.

Sure they sensationalized......clearly for profit, that doesn't mean that their leaps of logic are wrong, does it?

That doesn't mean that the BBC show is right and Cameron's was wrong, why not do some more research?

Heck debunk it completely, why not? If they are completely wrong, make them look horrible for doing it, ruin their reputations.

What has anyone got to lose by more research?

It already has tons of people who have said why its garbage - you simply choose to ignore it all (such as suggesting the FBI analysis might be wrong). All it takes is one person to make think "well, it's a possiblity!" so all the research in the world won't do anything. The people in the freaking movie already said that what they said was taken out of context, yet you use that to suggest there's a case and it needs more research.

Time, money, effort. Lunatics aren't going to change their mind - they want to believe it and will continue to do so. Anyone who objectively looks at it already has enough evidence to dismiss it as of right now. It's up to the people that believe this to prove it if they want any credibility. And they did a miserable job of it in their one attempt so far.

I have seen scholars debunking it, but not on science at all, but on opinion.

    I guess time will tell.

you're miscontruing what's happening here. it's not merely that it's sensationalized...but rather that their answers are being edited and cut in such a way as to lead to a conclusion that they say isn't supported.

Max, that is EXACTLY what I am talking about...they say it doesn't say it...others say it DOES say it....

It is precisely my point.....opinion.....not fact.
No, I get that. And clearly that is an issue for sure. But, it is a sensitive issue, no scientist is going to say anything until all the facts are in and tested....that is the nature of science.

the only people saying it are the very people IN the documentary. and that is suspect, too, now, considering some of those folks are saying, "you twisted what i was saying to support your conclusion, and i'm angry about it."

it has little to no credibility and seems to be getting trashed by a whole lot of people from a whole lot of different disciplines...and the guys behind it all...are they experts? no..they're a filmmaker and a journalist second-guessing experts who've had the information for over 20 years, now.

Doesn't change their opinion about what it says, just that they are pissed that conclusions were lept to before the science took over.

    deliberately obtuse?

the facts as they are don't get you to the conclusion these jokers are claiming. that's it. and they're getting railed for it all over the place. it has zero credibility. there is no one coming out backing them up in any way.

That happens ALL the time with major discoveries, then as time goes on, science takes over and the tune changes. (Not saying that will happen here, but I do want it completely and thoroughly investigated by a group of scientists without any skin in the game, so to speak).

The first thing scientist do is rush to say that the new theory is wrong, the world is flat after all, and smoking is good for you.....
