Is Fred jones only 6'2 he seems to play bigger then that he always kinda reminded me of steve francis as far as athletic ability but more size and strength.

i don't say this often but i agree with the sooner. i don't know if the numbers work out but i'll assume they do and that we could give james more than the mle by trading those 3 contracts. losing luther would be a hit but worth it if it was what it took to sign james (now if he'll just take the mle then it's not needed).

mutombo is only going to play one more year and he barely played last year. it's not really much of a loss. just about anyone can play 10 minutes at backup C and we're not taking the title next year anyway. worrying about losing him is much too short term thinking. losing ryan bowen. nuff said. losing luther would hurt but be worth it, especially as we would still have the TE and MLE. i'm sure we could find a luther head-caliber player with those and then add depth with what's left over. granted, this assumes management would spend the money, and i'm not overly optimistic, but they'd spend some of it.

plus this is about the only s&t toronto would even consider. small, expiring contracts, plus a small contract for a decent young player.

hopefully we just sign him quickly and don't have to go through anything else but that seemed to be a really good idea.

Well there is Alvin Williams' contract who has 2 years left and whose last year may not be a team option even though hoopshype reports it as such.

I agree that Mike James would want this to happen, but why would toronto? Wouldn't they just say Luther Head plus TE in S&T for James? If James says no, that's too little money, what's his recourse? The MLE. The market is such that there's not a lot of teams that have cap space for James. It's not to say his production wouldn't warrant a higher payday. But it's the current market condition.

i think James wanted longer term than more money
since Dallas is only offer him 3 years with MLE
3 years later at age 34 i don't think he can get more than 5M

I'm still not seeing how a deal would be structured btwn Dal and Tor. Dal sends a 1st round pick plus Croshere in exchange for Alvin Williams and Mike James? No, the salaries don't work out. I'm not Mr.-Preposterous-Trade-Suggester or anything, so maybe there's a RealGM trade approved scenario that would work.

But to me, Toronto has little need for cap relief, particularly while most of their core young talent works for cheap. 1 year off the books doesn't matter much at all. They'd be more interested in picking up young assets, like Luther Head or draft picks.

First let me say I like Mike James' game. I don't know that he's perfect for us, but I do like his game.

I wonder though, if we are not acting a bit desperate for this. I mean, he's come out and SAID he wants to come here, he lives here (or his wife does, or something) and yet we are in a bidding war with the likes of Cuban etc. to make the BEST offer. Doesn't sound like his desire to come here is that sincere if his agent is unhappy enough with the MLE deal that he's now talking S&T deal instead. That doesn't sound like a player who's willing to make concessions to come to his "home team".

So, flame me if you wish, but this makes me questions his dedication, and sincerity, and considering I'm not sure his style will COMPLEMENT Yao's and Tracy's game (Yes, I think he's a good addition to the team otherwise)... I'm just not 100% about this. Seems he has "Me" issues everywhere he goes. This all seems to support this.

What are you crazy? I've ready some crazy stuff on this board but you take the cake. Get your act together or else.

Oh and I agree with what you said but I think James is the best FA out there and he's 10x's better than any other guard on the roster so we need to GET IT DONE.

Yeah, well, what do YOU know? And yes, I'm a bit off my rocker. As I said, I don't mind us getting him, I just thing we're trying too hard.

And anyway VP, what's wrong with a little religion? If the believers are right, they're set, if they're wrong, they'll never know it. Not to mention, there's a flaw in your plan, being a believer in religion doesn't automatically get you to an afterlife, so I'm told. Silly little freak. Let em have their fun. See ya tomorrow.

This is his last real chance to score a nice fat contract!. do you blame the guy for trying to milk it for all it's worth?....i think he will endup as a rocket, but the details are still unknown.

This Fascination people have with calling james a selfish me player is Unwarranted. if he was a jackass as everyone claims, why are the rockets tripping over themselves to bring him back. you dont appreciate a good thing till it's gone!.

This is exactly why I want him back. The Rockets know him and if they want him back here, I do also.

He knows Van Gundy's system, and won't have to spend a chunk of it figuring out what to do. For a team that wants to start winning again yesterday, it counts for a lot.

Exactly. Considering JVG's tough stance on no knuckleheads allowed, something tells me James is a good teammate. without Yao and Tracy's approval, there is nowy we would have went after him.

My point was I think we're trying too hard. I do think he's a good addition to the team. Again, maybe not perfect, for reasons that I posted, and that others have noted about him in the past here, but a good addition.

I just don't wanna mortgage the farm to get him... especially since he supposedly WANTED to come here. I think, from what I've heard of the rumors, that we're trying too hard. I hope we get him, but not at any cost.

Isnt the rumor that a S&T involving James would include a third team. The S&T helps the Rox cuz they keep their MLE. Memphis might be involved cuz they need to find a home for Swift since he says he doesnt want to play there. Toronto benefits by maybe picking up a player like Swift who can take some of Villanueva's minutes and might fit in with an uptempo style the raps want to play.

Memphis gets Gay and Juwan plus the smaller of the Rox TE. Juwan takes Stro's place to make the deal work and the difference in his and stro's salary is lessened by the TE. I think they are too interested in getting gay to let this get in the way.

Raptors sign James and send him to the Rockets and get Stro and the Rox bigger TE. Raps get a player for free and the TE almost wipes out Stro's salary the first year.

Rox get James who gets his contract through the signing with the Raps instead of the MLE from the Rox. Rox also pick up battier and have their MLE to spend on someone else, either a 4 or a 2.

Im not sure if this works but I think it does.

how exactly does that work with the TE? it seems like we would have to split everything up into smaller deals, right?

The Rockets have two trade exceptions a 4.2 million dollar trade exception (not sure the origins of this) and a 1.9 million dollar trade excetion which they got from Miami in the Gerald Fitch, Derek Anderson trade.

So I believe "Yao #1" is referring to using the 1.9 million TE in the 3 team trade to make all the numbers match up.

This is from a Minnesota paper today, July 7:

James, one of the biggest names remaining on the free-agent market, was a busy man Thursday. He met with the Houston Rockets and had a long talk at Cox Pavilion with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

"Minnesota is definitely one of my top (choices)," James said. "They have one of the best players in the NBA in Kevin Garnett. I've been a fan of Kevin since I've been in the game. It would be an honor for me to play with somebody like that, because I think he thinks like me as far as how I approach the game, and he would bring out the best in me."

Doesn't rule us out but was worth passing along...

(last post of it - just wanted to cover bases for all)
