A recap of Gucci8888's post in the other James thread, recapping someone else's summary: "From jeremyang2000: TE: 4.2M+4.7M+5.3M+5.9M+6.7M=26.9M(12.5% increase per year) MLE 5.0M+5.4M+5.8M+6.3M+6.8M=29.3M(8% increase per year) It's only 2.4M difference if supposed we offer a 5-year contract. Basically, Mike James is better off taking the MLE than trying to pursue a S&T for our TE." So, 4 years under the TE nets James $20.2M 3 years under MLE nets James $16.2M
haha sorry. I get carried away with basketball around this time of year. To answer the thread more on topic though, Toronto's stated that they are not interested in a S&T with neither Houston, Dallas, nor Minnesota. So James will most likely sign for the MLE...whether it be Houston, Dallas, Minnesota is the question.
No, Toronto said it doesnt want to "take back salary" via a S&T. The Trade Exception allows them to S&T James and not "take back salary." The question is what is Toronto's motivation to do this? We throw them a 2nd round pick. We could also throw them the rights to Vspan or trade them Luther Head. Any of those scenarious has Toronto either not taking back salary or taking back very minimal salary. It would be appealing to them. Obviously ideally we would not want to give up Luther Head/rights to Vspan. I certainly wouldnt do that unless I knew I could get a quality player with our MLE which we would be saving in the S&T James for TE scenario.
are you guys okay if we trade luther? it might have something to do with him not playing in the summer league..
How would you structure a deal that would involve a Head or rights to Vspan? You can't combine players with the TE, right?
Riley, the key is Toronto is under the cap so if we moved Luther to them they can just absorb the salary and we would then get a small Trade Exception from it. Then in a different deal you would do the James S&T for our Trade Exception.
Head <<<< Fred Jones. If James takes TE, we lose Luther but get Fred Jones, I'm all in. That said, I'd rather use the TE toward an athletic 4, if one is available. I'd certainly take J Jefferies over Jones.
Ah, makes sense. I bet we kiss Luther goodbye then. He would do well in an uptempo game. His ability to ball hawk and play passing lanes would work fine. Likewise, he could spot up with TJ feeding him for open 3's.
I think you can only give your own players 10.5% annual increases under the new CBA, with 8% for other teams' free agents.
Riley, I agree. If we could get Mike James (S&T, TE) and then Fred Jones (MLE) I would part with Luther Head. Mike James at PG and Fred Jones at SG. While Jones isnt quite the shooter Head is, Jones is a bit taller, MUCH stronger, better finisher on the break, more athletic and he can guard the bigger SGs that Head has a problem with. Jones can be a starter, I dont think Head can.
Of course, who knows if James would be happy with the deal, but if the figures are correct, he gets his 4 year deal in his hometown, a starting gig, at least this coming season, and more money than the 3 year MLE. Definitely the best deal for the Rocks, even if we give up Head, which would be a bummer.
Sometimes you have to give Head to get what you want. I apologize. That's my first Head joke. I had to get one in just in case he got traded.
I dont want to trade him and if we do we better get something more than just a sign trade for mj in return! But if we can just sign trade mj for the te than we can go out and use the mle on Bonzi or jeffries! IF we cannot get either of those guys than i say we split the mle on flip murray and trevor ariza! And sign Cato to the min.
Why does everyone think James will take 4.2M when his agent is asking for a S&T? S&T usually means a player wants more money than he can get with the MLE. I think he's after a contract starting from at least 6M in the first year.
After thinking about it, losing Head won't be all that bad. He's very undersized, and he can't take care of the ball. Bogans would be a better backup 2 to Alston/James. And trading Head means we can get Frahm, who I like very much in special situations. I'd do the trade now that I think about it.
