I see your point and agree but that is the stigma of being the #1 overall pick. People hold you to a higher standard - a standard that for the most part is impossible to obtain.
Haha, sad but true. You guys do have a nice collection of players in place though, Louis Murphy and that other rook reciever looked nice this year. You guys have McFadden, Fargas, and Bush as the three headed running monster; if they can stay healthy that is more so McFadden. Gradkowski looked nice in the 2nd half of the season, especially that game against the all holy Steelers. So I'd say if you guys were to land a Sam Bradford or Ndamakong Sue to go with Asoumgha on D that team would have some guys to play with and be competitive. I just don't understand the Hayward-Bey pick of last season, I know Davis loves fast but Murphy isn't nearly as fast but a far better wide out at this point. You guys, imo, have a pretty nice future with the right moves. The Seymour deal was a great move as well, I'll put that under the compensation for giving up Moss for so little when he was traded to the second best show on turf.
That was the maddening thing, in the final 3 games of the 2008 season he played good football. He made smart throws, good throws. They beat a pretty good Tampa Bay team in the season finale that needed that win to get into the playoffs. Everyone was expecting him to "make the leap" this year and establish himself as a legit starting QB in the league. Instead he vastly regressed. The pocket presence just isn't there. He cannot sense the pass rush to save his life. He was so inaccurate on so many throws it was laughable. He's not a leader by definition, he doesn't command the huddle. He doesn't spend extra time in the film room, he comes back from Mobile every offseason 30 pounds heavier than he should be. He's got a cannon arm and he's not completely stupid, he did well against some pretty good SEC defenses... but he won't put forth the effort necessary to learn how to succeed at the next level and thats on him. You can't teach effort sadly.
Not a bad year, but a horrible year. Tim Couch put up ratings in the 70's every year in the league and was a bust. Your right that he still has a chance to prove everyone wrong, but at this point he is a bust.
I get the stigma of being a number one pick. I also get that he is a raider and everyone is supposed to hate everything raider. I'm just offering a little perspective. more perspective, alex smith first three years in the league, 40, 74,57. didn't play his third year and finally looked decent this past season. I understand that russell has a rep for not working hard and isn't the sharpest tool in the thread, but people need to lay off the guy a bit. this is one reason I don't like Matt Jackson all that much. He mentions Russell anytime bad qb play is a topic on his show. I'm like why do you care so freakin much
A dominant offense line would cure a lot of his problems of holding the ball too long. Too bad they still haven't been able to find a decent left tackle, which is why I'm thinking thats what direction they'll go in the draft this year.
Makes you think about athletes who were not very good, but who you find out are actually insanely rich.

David Carr got a contract extension so he's probably richer, and I don't think he blew most of his money on jewelery.
I don't think people care that he's a Raider...I mean, no one I know hates the Raiders or anything...I think it's just that he has the stigma of not caring and not working hard at all. Hell, even his head coach says he needs to prepare like a pro to the public and it doesn't change his work ethic. He's fat, his footwork has regressed, he won't watch game film to study defenses, he is horribly innacurrate with his passes and he allegedly lost the locker room. I think that when you get $40mm guaranteed as a #1 pick, people get pretty pissed off when you refuse to work hard to justify your money. I don't think it has to do with his performance...of course most young QB's are going to struggle and Alex Smith is a fine example...but you never heard stories about Alex Smith not preparing or being totally out of shape...I think that's the difference. Russell might be a great guy in real life...but I still look at him and think, "This is exactly what's wrong with paying rookies this kind of money." He's a total waste of talent...and I watched a bunch of his LSU games...he was great. It just appears that he got his money and stopped caring about being a good quarterback...which is a shame. (especially considering the Sea Monster refuses to believe that he's worthless and insists upon supporting him).
Russell Okung would be nice, but everyone is assuming the Chiefs will take him, so given that he's off the board they may choose to address the pass rush.
David Carr just needed more time to flourish into the great quarterback he is today. Texans were too impatient with him. That is why we haven't made the playoffs ever.
