Some people keep bringing up this few months of domination. That’s also fake news. His best stretch as a rocket when they took out a big man so that he could actually fit was a little less than 20 games. That’s a little over a month. Hardly anything to be excited about. Especially when at the end of that stretch the league adjusted and the rockets started to struggle once again. Yes the rockets were struggling before the season paused. Westbrick isn’t close to a superstar who had his worst overall season to date. His numbers contributions to winning basketball were just abysmal
The trip dubs are a minor aspect. As folks said before, players should fit a team and not vice versa. The team made the trade to fit better with WB's style. Nobody's playing style should be above the team other than Harden's. There is already an untouchable, cannot afford to have 2. This superstar narrative is getting older by the minute. I do not care if you provide servants for him off the court but on the court he is just another talented player to me who is getting older. He is gone with or without Harden also gone, I would prefer the latter for now but that's absolutely something that could be seen in the crystal ball. Thank the Lord it is a business decision too. The new CBA will force Tilman hard to at least consider trading him. FYI the Rockets advanced to the 2nd round because of their improved Defense and not because of Russell Westbrook.
What you and @hakeem94 have said are not mutually exclusive. Prior to Covid-19 and quad injury, Westbrook was carrying the team and scored 30+ in 20+ consecutive games. The problem is that when Russ limited by injury he becomes a huge liability because he presses and freelances which disrupts cohesion in both defense and offense. The turnovers become a domino effect. Will Silas continue using same system that maximized Russ is the bigger question.
Russ in iso is like watching a horror movie. I'd much rather him push pace as much as possible, especially when Harden sits. Rockets just need more players that love to run and have boundless energy to complement Russ. Too many half court stationary catch and shoot players right now.
