Jalen has figured it out?? No. But, he has figured out ways to impact the game in ways other than scoring, so he will continue to get starters minutes on this team. His defense has been a bit underrated, to me. Dude is giving effort, diving for loose balls, blocking shots, taking on the challenge of other teams’ best scorers on some of these switches. His offense is what it is. I think he’s just going to be a guy who may give you 30 one night, and 9 the next. Some days he looks like a superstar guard, some days he looks like a bench player. Inconsistent, but given the talent around him, we’ll be fine.
Why? If he believes amen is the future why not let him make mistakes. We aren't winning the title this year. Let him learn it's better for future
I think Jalen improves again next year, including 3 pt shooting. His form is much better when shooting in rhythm and being set up by other players. He should never take another step back 3, unless it's in desperation.
Except against Boston, but I get you. With this team you are correct. Surround him with 3 point shooters and he will make the right read every time.
His form is actually better when he feels the ball from handling. I don't think you understand Jalen that well. I'm not even trying to portray this as a positive for him. It's a flaw in his game. He struggles to shoot consistently if he isn't "feeling the ball". Notice when he gets into these 20+ pt quarters. He's dominating the ball during those times. He isn't a natural Rip Hamilton or Reddick type shooter who can be standing around in a corner for many possessions and then all of a sudden attempt a shot with emaculate muscle memory.
I think he's better as a spot up shooter when he is open rather than creating his own 3 point shot. Can you find stats to back up either position?
The issue with Jalen’s shot is they are often such high difficulty shots. Fading into corners, stepping back, multiple defenders, end of shot clock, etc. He needs to learn to get to his spot and raise up and shoot. Even when he gets some space, he’s often fading with his momentum going backwards. Rise up and knock it down. He’s making it much harder on himself. I like when someone creates for him, and he gets an open 3. His form on those is much better. Straight up and down.
nba.com break down shots by type. And yes, he is indeed better on catch & shoot 3s than self-created ones. If he wasn't getting paid $35mil/yr and taking 20 shots a game, he can work as a low-end starter/high-end backup player. But obviously the Rockets are still trying to see if he's a future star, and on that front he has yet to succeed.
If that is the case, we need to trade him. People on this board have been clamoring that you have to have a superstar to build around. Well, we have one. What our superstar needs around him is consistent 3&D players. If Jalen is just a streaky shooter he needs to be a 6th man. Jalen dominating the ball is not a recipe for success as he has poor court vision. Rip Hamilton and Reddick were valuable role players. I think Jalen has potential to be a good 3 pt shooter, but his shot selection has to change and he has to stop taking step back threes off the dribble as he so often does. I have seen improvement in his shot selection, but without the appropriate spacing he will never be a star player. He can be an effective driver if we surround him and Amen with shooters, including at the center position. I think we are almost in agreement. I see 2 problems, Sengun and Ime. We have to pick who we build around Sengun or Amen, they are not compatible on offense. My choice is Amen, in that a 4 or 5 out offense is what has dominated the NBA for over a decade. Post dominated offense is dead forever. There are just too many long players and massive athleticism for it to work. Ime is a problem, if he can't coach offense. The jury is still out on Ime, until he has a more balanced roster.
Sure trade him. I wouldn't mind a Amen Jalen package for Luka for example. Because if Jalen ain't it, we don't have anyone waiting in he corners who can do what Jaken does against POA defenses. That means I disagree with you on your evaluation of Amen also. When I see people who can't read what a DHO play looks like and think that it was set iso clear our for Amen to take a last shot, it's hard for me to trust their basketball analysis. How wee are seeing idiots who merely see catch and shoot numbers being higher fg% than off the dribble means Green should be regulated as a corner three specialist or something. We have brain dead basketball analysis here. I'm tired of it. Amen will be fine. He has talents that make him still extremely valuable even if he isn't a primary shot creator. Jalen kinda has to be to be part of any long term core. Beig a shot creator is his special talent. So he kinda doesn't have a job on this team anymore if he can't fulfill that role.
Yes we just disagree about Amen. He is going to be an absolutely elite Point whether guard or forward. He can be a 20/10 guy without ever developing a 3 pt shot if he has shooters around him. Jalen can be one of them hopefully.
It's not so much having 40 games where he plays out of his mind good, its about eliminating the nights where he is a liability as a shooter. He cannot have 40% of his games with a 3p percentage .250 or below and 51%of games with a FG% below .390 Those numbers are just unacceptable on a night to night basis. Less bad and more average .... and enjoy the nights when he shoots the lights out.
"Jalen has figured it out??" That no matter your effort, win or lose, 40 points this game and 11 the next, your contract is guaranteed.
Actually Jalen doesn't need a shooter at the 5 as long as there's 3 shooters on the floor with him and the 5 is a good vertical threat. That's what we were doing during the streak last season with Amen being the only non-shooter on the floor. Amen needs shooters at all spots but it works out because Jalen can shoot - he's 0.9% away from being a very good shooter. Don't like his stepback, but at this point it's more likely he breezes past that 0.9% and becomes one of the better shooters in the league because of his really high volume (8+ attempts). More importantly when this team fixes spacing (maybe we climb to average spacing), Jalen's FTA will catapult back to 6+ attempts. He did that just with Sengun/Gordon/KPJ/Jabari. That will be game over for everyone in combination with his shooting. This why I always say what's good for Green is good for Amen. They both deserve at least half as much spacing as their peers.
It just is what it is at this point with Jalen. They gave him the extension and hoped he'd outperform it. He hasn't. If we trot him out there again next year alongside Amen (who is going to start) and FVV then we are going to be in this same boat unless Jalen becomes a dramatically better shooter or rim finisher. He's a primary ball handler that can't finish through contact, largely can't take defenders off the dribble (he has gotten better at this but still not Morant like), and can't shoot. Also still has a loose handle (but so does the whole ****ing team). We need an alternative SG that accents Amen and Sengun better. They'll likely roll with Jalen again next year but we need a failsafe if we end up with another year of....this. Ultimately it's Ime's decision but I wonder how much Stone is listening to him considering some of the comments Ime's made during the Minnesota and Toronto games. I think at least almost everyone in the fanbase and outside of it agree that Amen is the 1A that needs to take precedence when it comes to team construction.
