its wild that there are still folks wanting to trade green to start cam. he's not even in his prime yet. Man is playing good defense, playing for the team and is a big part of why we are where are at in the nba standings.
The are precious few of them left and those that remain are much quieter. They are close to extinction.
now that the rockets are in the media all the same old talking points are coming backup like jalen is a bad defender. every talking head wants to trade someone from the team.
Oh come on dude you let your feelings get the best of you with that statement about 6th man. Was a tough loss. I know it’s fun to be the hard truths guy, but I’m pretty sure you don’t think Jalen is going to be bench caliber in the future.
A couple of points about Jalen. I think he's still a below average defensive player. He's improved significantly in the past two seasons though. His DPM two seasons ago was -2.0 which is bad. This season it's -1.0. That's below average but a major improvement. He has the perfect coach to help/make him improve defensively. There is good reason to believe he can become a league-average defensive wing over the next few years with good coaching and a little more strength. He has improved his offensive efficiency significantly this season as well. His True Shooting Percentage is at .556 this season. He was at .541 last season. I have optimism that can improve with better shot selection and better finishing at the rim. Better outside shooting from his teammates would also improve this as Jalen would have more space near the rim to finish. His current TS% is better this season than the following players: Bam Adebayo Paolo Banquero Scottie Barnes Paul George Jaylen Brown LaMelo Ball Cade Cunningham Ja Morant Trae Young Those are all considered star players in the NBA. It's also much better than Sengun this season. Jalen is an emerging star and is on the right trajectory. The future is really bright. The present is pretty good too.
Idk how one can watch green all season and still come to the conclusion he is a below average defender on a team with a top 5 defense as a starter. Wild.
Yeah, agreed. It doesn't pass the eye test. His defense is so much stronger, and his effort on that end is light years better than it ever was before. I still don't love his game, but I don't see him as a below average defender at all anymore.
Jalen will be ok, the leap curve is not always the same or correlated for every player.. His leap and effort deserves praise, he just needs to focus on his game.. He is a scorer, he does not have the skills and court vision of a playmaker. He should leave the decision making to Sengun and FVV, concentrate on drives and scoring.. Sometimes he loses himself and forgets passing, but this can be improved.. He will be good.. He wont be numero uno, it is clear. But he will be number 2 or 3.. My predictions between core 3: Sengun-MVP Amen-Best Player Green-Best Scorer
Im encouraged by Jalen this season, especially with his TS%. Progress is progress. Those players you compared him against also bring a lot more to the table in terms of rebounds, assists, stocks, defense than Jalen. You have to compare the complete package when talking all star level player. Im hopeful he gets there as a playmaker. Once that part comes consistently, then he's comparable to those guys.
My post was a positive one about Jalen's improvement on both sides of the ball. Responding to your comment though, I do think Jalen is still a net negative on defense. His on-ball defense has improved a lot but he still makes a lot of mistakes on rotations. His defensive IQ is much lower than our other 4 starters. He often fails to box out and his man is too frequently the guy getting the offensive rebound. Jalen's advanced defensive metrics are still below average- DPM at -1.0 and Darko DPM at -1.1. Those are improving though and should continue to improve with experience, effort and good coaching. The fact that we're a top-5 defense doesn't prove Jalen is a good defender. The Clippers team defensive rating is better than ours. That doesn't make Norm Powell and James Harden good defensive players. It just means they have teammates who are able to make up for the defensive liabilities. Jalen is now starting with four other players who are good-to-great defenders. Anyway, my post was a positive one about Jalen's progress and bright future. Your eye test as to his defense is obviously different that mine.
I didn't have an emotional reaction to the Grizzlies loss. Call me crazy, but steadily winning 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 3/5 is better a long winning streak IMO. Jalen will be a starter somewhere for several years to come. I just think his best role on a championship team would be as a microwave guy, 6th man.
You also have to ignore the HC's interview. You know that guy Ime Udoka, he kind of takes defense seriously.
Because he is consistently peaking and slow to pick up his man. He locks in, sometimes, but is inconsistent on both ends, particularly when his shot is not falling. Jalen is a good player, not a great one. DD
I agree with this. Jalen has proven to me that he is going to be really good. The biggest issue right now is down the stretch he gets blitzed and turns the ball over, rather than quickly finding a teammate before the double team gets there. That's on Ime. We need a better plan than Jalen or FVV playing hero ball. Starting at about 4-5 minutes left we went to FVV centric offense, when we should have handed the reins over to Amen. FVV/Sengun centric offense can be effective late, but we didn't have Sengun this game. Ime is still challenged on the offensive side of the ball. Hopefully they either get him help or he gets better somehow.
