He is forcing it a lot of times and during interviews he always said mostly the right things but he cannot follow thru and make it happen.

Here's some usage stats for the team so far:

    Losses: https://www.nba.com/stats/players/u...erBench=&TeamID=1610612745&dir=A&sort=USG_PCT

    Wins: https://www.nba.com/stats/players/u...erBench=&TeamID=1610612745&dir=A&sort=USG_PCT

Small sample size that can be skewed by a few things, but so far, Jalen leads the team in usage in our wins and Sengun leads in usage when we lose (though not by much)

The flip side is that Alperen shoots more in wins and Jalen shoots more in losses.

Jalen leads the team in three point attempts in wins and losses (although in wins he shoots less of the teams total threes)

Interestingly, in Wins Fred shoots less threes and Reed jumps all the way up to second. So far, that is the biggest jump I've seen in a single stat for a player when it comes to wins and losses. In Wins Reed shoots a much larger percent of the teams total 3 point shots and in losses he barely shoots at all.

its amazing how people can only view efficiency on whether Jalen has improved or been a good player this year.

When he started the season great it was "amazing defense", "improved vision", "slower pace", "much better shot selection, "much better mechanics".

now hes going thru his predictable drought and its "not a good defender", "terrible vision", "no pace just barrels", "terrible shot selection", "bad mechanics".

people see the game thru very poor rose tinted glasses on both sides of the coin. If he was still shooting great people would think he has become this elite 2 way player with a huge improvement and in line for MIP. Since hes reverting back to his norm shooting nothing has changed and hes a mindless chucker.

it really is comical how all criticism comes down to is just whether he is shooting well or not.

    .....

The following will be for people who have actual discourse and watch the game outside of just the box score. Please dont respond with simple minded remarks.

His elbow has started drifting out on his shots again and isnt as tucked like it was to start the season. I can almost tell whether it is going to go in or not before it leaves his hand. Hes drifting and fading on his jumpshots more again as well. Whether that be backwards or to the side. I would like him to get back to the mechanics he worked on this off-season but its expected to revert back when you are making mechanic changes.

I really am perplexed at how bad he has been from the free-throw pull up. This should be his "go-to" move but hes incredibly cold on it this year. I do expect it to aggress to the mean over the year but its shocking and troublesome. Overall he has been very bad from 2 except at the rim which he is not getting to often. His FTr is also the lowest of his career and the biggest flaw in his progression is he has not learned to create contact and finish through it consistently. I do think he suffers from a bad whistle but im glad he doesnt complain much anymore.

His vision has obviously improved but is still very rudimentary. Its first read or second read and the occasional third read. Need more third reads out of him and vision to pass to the corners and reading the defense. Likely wont be better then a secondary creator which is the role is currently is in and isnt good enough yet. He does need the on job training though and we are winning with him. Its going to likely cost us when it comes to the playoffs unless he drastically improves over the year.

His defense is worlds better then where we came from. I am most please and happy with his defense. I appreciate that he has taking on the challenge to be a good defender. Hes not our best defender by any means but he is more than good enough. Its why he is being awarded with a lot of minutes this year and the closing lineups. Hes the worst defender on those small ball end of game lineups but the fact he is there is something to be proud of.

At the end of the day, as it always has been, its going to come down to his efficiency. I'd like to see him improve his FTr and start nailing that FT jumper. Hes got to see film on his jumper soon and find his balance.

Maybe everybody, including Jalen himself, should lower the bar and stop expecting him to be numero uno. Just play the game right, go with the flow, rather than try to carry the team and dominate.

If the immediate goal is to be something like numero tres, i.e. a highly useful role player that can get you buckets in crunch time, that would be pretty good. And then maybe he can grow from there and be a true star. Some players need more time to develop.

As you said there is a lot of variance in the stats, especially losses with 5 games. But it looks like Sengun gets the higher usage because of higher turnovers in the losses despite less attempts. His turnover % is significantly more in losses.

FWIW, if you haven't seen it yet, Sam Vecenie recently did a bit on Jalen's struggles to start the year and he talks a bit about the shot mechanics and the fact that he doesn't play at pace so all his shots are him trying to slow down from full speed.

I mostly agree with your assessment. I don't know how to fix the shot mechanics - he looked great to start the season and I agree his form appears to be changing after those first 4 or 5 games because he misses shots in different ways every time. I think big picture there are two conversations here:

    - the things Jalen needs to do to save his career - Sam covers some of the things about playing with pace and finding ways to slow down so every shot isn't a high difficulty physical achievement - he has to find ways to make the game easier for himself and it's not with more complicated dribble drive moves.
    - the things Houston needs to do to have an effective SG while Jalen is still here (knowing there is a high likelihood we try to move him this offseason if he doesn't make serious strides). I do agree that shot selection is the easiest way to make him better both in his career and more importantly as our starting SG. When digging through the numbers I noticed he is actually hitting shots at a high level when assisted from his teammates and I wondered the other day if Udoka needs to give him a green light to attack when the assist comes to him, but otherwise he has a red or at very least a yellow light on self assisted play because he is just SO inefficient there. I'm thinking things like - no 3pters with more than 16 seconds on a the clock, no mid range jump shots(get close enough for a floater or a layup or pull the ball out), no jumping out of the way of opponents at the rim - bench him if he doesn't go into players, etc. Just force him to play in the ways where he is statistically more helpful to the team and stop trusting in Jalen's instincts - because his instincts are pretty bad and appear to be getting worse. I also think the team needs to work with Jalen on his help defense - while he has made strides he has been bad there and if he were marginally better, Milwaukee likely doesn't beat us the other game(and if Fred had hit that pass!!!!) when Jalen lost his man and then by dumb luck ended up in the right place but still ended up putting up a pretty bad defensive attempt on a Lillard drive for the go ahead bucket.

...honestly though at this point I'm just thinking we can't trade Jalen this year because of when we offered the extension so this year is about making the best of the situation we have knowing that we likely need to upgrade his position on the court. If he can become the shooter or defender we need - great. At this point though, I think it's on him to meet what the team needs because he has simply not demonstrated enough progress to trust his personal development. He has 3 Jordan-esque plays a game so the promise is still there - but we gotta focus more on how to eliminate the 15 other bad shots from our team's diet than how to help Jalen improve on his shot.

As you said, there is at least one clear hater in Bobby.

Can you name one person who thinks Jalen is scoring well?

Lol trying to label me a "hater" simply because I have always pointed out the obvious flaws in his game that some of you are just now starting to acknowledge is absurd.

I have never had an emotional attachment to ANY player.... I'm neither a "hater" or fanboi... I'm just a Rockets fan.

Btw this analysis f*cking infuriated me. I'm so sick of this dude's fake nice guy attitude when he's cherry picking **** just to double down on the fact that he made a stupid prediction years ago: Jalen should be a shooter??? Now his problem with Jalen is that he's attacking the rim too much? He acts like he's done his research but you can clearly tell this guy has barely watched Rockets games.

Watch his video. Almost every shot he likes, the paint is clear. Almost every shot he doesn't, the paint is packed. It's f*cking ridiculous also that he cherry picked Jalen's finishing at the rim in halfcourt settings only with the entire team struggling at shooting and playing at a snail's pace - that's what he is? That's what Jalen is? You're telling me he didn't look up the fact that Jalen is more efficient than ALPI less than 5 feet from the rim?

The other guy who's usually with him probably dislikes Jalen MORE, but at least brings solid analysis to the table. This guy is hating on Jalen Green for not becoming a shooter - how is a guy who was never meant to be a shooter ever going to satisfy this guy? F*cking egomaniac.

Don't understand why he has so many fanboys here. I guess just signing up to Synergy and Cleaning the Glass qualifies you as an expert these days.

I can think of at least three people who think Jalen has been our best player so far this year. Does that count?

I have only caught parts of this video and recaps. I do plan on giving it a watch though.

The problem people have with Jalen doing the pull-up 3 with 16seconds on the clock is confusing to me, as this has been preached by Ime to be the correct choice. They want him to pull this with confidence. Fred does this same exact thing often. Unfortunately, because we lack outside shooting so much we face a very crowded paint. The correct read and the shot Ime wants most times is this exact pull-up. Which is why when fred and Jalen are hot we are a great team. We have to be willing to punish the defense and take what it gives us. Too often then not our lead guards arent efficient enough to punish it. Simple as that. Calling it a bad shot is not accurate imo.

As a coach you have to instill confidence and live with the results. Its why we our system focuses on rebounding, especially offensive, and turnovers. Its not designed this way just because. Its designed this way with the knowledge we arent an efficient offense and have to make up for that with extra possessions and shots. We are designed around grit and defense. Not motion and shooting. Fans just dont like the ugliness of it all. If Jalen and Fred where both 60%ts and 38% from 3 we would be a top seed and look like GSW currently does who also emphasis the turnover battle and rebounding. We are better defensively (they are no slouch) but they are much more efficient as an offense. We arent that efficent at "making" shots, yet because of our style of play yet we are the 11th rated offense because of the "extra" shots we get.

Changing what Jalen does just isnt going to happen. He just has to get better at those things, and to jest and say he hasnt improved is malcontent. Hes vastly improved in all facets, even if the results are the same. You can recognize improvement while noticing the improvement hasnt made a difference (which so far this season seems the case). He and Sengun are the only 2 who can create their own shot and that does provide value even at an inefficient rate. The alternative is the dillon brooks post up or iso. our 1st option is the fred and sengun pnr. our 2nd option is the jalen and sengun pnr. and our 3rd option is the sengun post up.

Jalen could get better at shot selection and half court decision making but I honestly don't think that's something that he's significantly worse than the field at.

Jalen needs to improve his shooting efficiency.

He has to be able to consistently make open or lightly contested shots. That would open up so much for him. You can see it in games when his shot is falling.

If he became a good shooter he would be an all star. If he significantly improves in all other areas he still might not make the rotation of a true championship contender.

This has nothing to do with play calling or team chemistry. He just has to make open shots for him to reach his full potential.

That's really what it comes down to, if he improved enough to be only slightly bad at shooting for a shooting guard then the rest of his game would open up. He's allegedly been working on it for at least 3 or 4 years now and his 3 point percentage has dropped every season so far.

So I'll say the same thing i did when he was a prospect, if he never learns to shoot, he'll be a bust.

That's STILL the thing we're all waiting to see from him.

a pull up 3 by a career 37% 3 pt shooter is a good shot

    but a career 33% 3 pt shooter?

it's like letting Wizards Jordan Poole and Kuzma pull up from 3 at 16 seconds as much as they want

especially if you have 1 other starter who shot 39% from the three last year
and 2 other starters shooting at least 36% from the three last year

right now, whenever jalen shoots 8 or more 3s a game, we are 6 and 4
    when he isn't, we're 5 and 1

when he plays 32 or more mintes a game, we are 5 and 4
    when he isn't, we're 6 and 1

Like Jalen, Franz needed that stick in the mud Sengun (Banchero) moved or
sitting on the bench. Just like in March last year.

I was told Jalen couldn't be number # or numero uno.

No clutch gene to lead or finish games

Ranks well in FG% of those with more than 2.3 FGA's in the second halves of games

I don't even think @Bobbythegreat is a "hater." He maybe a bit obsessive regarding Jalen or maybe it's that he is just passionate about the Rockets.

It is infuriating as a Rockets first fan, and not a X player fan, to see a player like Jalen be given such a long-leash, and focused player development over of other prospects for him to consistantly play like he has the past four years on offense.

Dude is a chuck factory, has little feel for the game, avoids contact, makes poor decisions, cannot hit any shot with any modicum of efficiency yet he is still given a high usage and encouraged by the coaching staff to be Captain Chuck.

I would much rather some of his reps go to Bari, and see how he develops when he is not an afterthought on offense. Jalen has had ample opportunites. Bari was also a top three pick.

I hope I am wrong about Jalen but not too many players make leaps forward as a primary scorer when their efficiency has stagnated and even regresessed into their 4th year.
