I think three point percentage is incredibly important. This is a quote from someone from the past, basically saying 3Pt% isn't all that. The bold is what I interpret this person to be thinking. The 39th in 2 pt% means he's not very good at 2 pt%. I had looked up PGs and SGs and had to count how many were above Jalen. His 2 point % was 13th out of 17th for the Rockets last year, for example.
Do you think Tari Eason gets the same type of two or are rota as Green? This is a poor way to analyze how good a player is at scoring or how talented they are at scoring. Cam Whitmore, Tari, Amen etc are getting a lot more of their two points attempts from attacking close outs, transition, being at the duner spot, offensive rebounds especially for Amen etc. Jalen gets a lot of his two points attempts from attacking point of attack set half court defenses. A better way to see what a player is good at in terms of scoring and playmaking, ts better to break it down into possession type like this: The most common type of play Green does is pnr ball handler possessions and as you can see he is well above league average in that play type. And that play type usually has the most difficult 2 pt attempts because it's usually against set half court defenses squared in on you. Where Green was really bad this season was on spot up attempts.
I agree that the difference between Jalen and Alpi in terms of fan expectation is that Alpi improves continuously and answers most doubter's concerns. It's easy to shut up Sengun haters. Jalen on the other hand keeps on feeding the doubter's concerns. To defend him, you have to look through cracks and holes to counter his criticisms. Sometimes it makes it look ridiculous. And then they have to use emotional terms such as "Jaters" to label people without providing much substantive argument that has not been beaten to death. To me, the most compelling argument for defending Jalen, which is also my remaining hope for him to fulfill his potential, is that progress is not leaner. There are examples of late bloomers. The thing is, non-linear progression by definition has no objective indicator. You just have to take it by faith and hope for the best.
What this shows is that there are a lot of better options on the team than Jalen Green at just about everything.... and the one thing he might be better than some others at, he almost never does. In short, take the ball out of his hands and have him off ball cutting to the basket and teach him how to shoot a basketball.
So now we're nuts for thinking him taking more shots than his predecessors contributed to his poor efficiency? I don't know man. I'm so tired of these conversations and I'm sure you are too. This might be the only place on earth a little optimism is treated like madness. All pessimists think they're realists. I just wanna talk basketball.
Impartial observations about JG from Mavericks/Nuggets guys. Mainly: - Can he be efficient? - Where is he in the pecking order? - When are the Rockets going to pick a direction? - If Jalen doesn't pan out....where is our scoring coming from? Nuggets guy really likes Reed/Amen.
He didn't take more shots than predecessors and I didn't make these comparisons. Posters here claimed that his inefficiency is normal for his age and other players who have went onto to become stars like booker had similar efficiency. I am just saying Booker did not have similar efficiency. And there is literally nobody that take as many shots as green with that kind of efficiency. teams simply don't let that happen. I am not sure who the poster was, maybe @astrosrule, he explained clearly that this is not the case. Then the discussion goes to context how booker did not play in a winning team and how easy his life was, ... This is not about being pessimist or optimist. It is just a claim being wrong. We can still be optimistic.
Of course him being a mindless chucker who can't shoot a basketball hurts his efficiency.... but it's also what pads his raw scoring numbers that are so often touted by his cultists. So sure, if he was in a more proper role for his level of talent getting 15-20 minutes per night off the bench it would probably help his efficiency.... but as a cultist, is that REALLY what you want?
True, both of them are at the very bottom of the league in FG%....fortunately for FVV he makes up for it with his 3 point shooting, overall TS%, and his ball handling/creation for others. Unfortunately, Jalen can't make up for it with anything.

Jalen drew more gravity of the defense because teams feared him getting all the way to the rack. Nobody is scared of midget VanVleet getting all the way to the rack. Most teams kept single coverage on him as he drove.......stayed close to their assignments on the perimeter. You don't understand that Jalen started getting to the rack when Sengun went out and we played 5-out. Once he felt better as a scorer driver then he started passing more. A good example of that was when he drove in the final plays vs the Thunder......drew 3 defenders.... hit Jabari in the corner for a made 3. Kenny Smith tells a story of when Olajuwon told Kenny Smith at halftime, "pass me the ball !!" Kenny replied, "Hakeem, you have 4 guys covering you !!" Hakeem replied, "that's ok, I'll dunk on all of them." ____________ Houston played in China in an off-season game back in 93/94. Olajuwon sat next to the owner during the entire trip back home. Olajuwon had asked to be traded in the off-season. Leslie Alexander tells this story......on that trip Mr. Alexander says he told Olajuwon he just needs to trust his teammates. Pass them the ball.
