Bari needs to be featured and given more shots period. Why is there no pnr/pick and pop with Green? If you run it with Sengun you know he’s heading towards the basket and won’t shoot from distance. Bari would make teams account for him. Why no post ups where he can turnaround and shoot over his defender? The offense got exposed big time in the playoffs. Terrible FVV and Green pnr with Sengun and Adams. Often ending up with Brooks going 1 on 1 with an expiring shot clock. Our best shooters Bari and Reed getting few minutes.
He's 22 and has 3 years of NBA experience. Everyone on the Rockets has the same horrible offensive coach (some of them have had 2 horrible coaches) yet so many are better than him. He was not even the best rebounding forward on the Rockets this season (both Amen Thompson and Tari Eason were better statistically) and he was not among the top 50 rebounders in the league. His shooting (at times) has been the lone bright spot in his otherwise mediocre career, yet his lack of other skills and basketball IQ means he can only get that shot off if he's wide open or given the ball in the absolutely perfect spot against a shorter defender (and even then, he still gets his **** blocked frequently by guards). He's not worth extending at the price he will likely ask. I would rather bet on Tari, who has actually been a net positive player even with his injuries.
Jabari can't set picks - Alpi can. Jabari can only post up guards - he doesn't have the strength or mass to post up forwards. And even when he gets a switch, he frequently gets blocked or fades away so much that he hits the front of the rim. Bari is 100% totally dependent on others setting him - dude is a traffic cone on offense. He hasn't earned more shots or the right to be "featured."
Why would we have any issue with a guy who needs to be set up? Which champion in NBA history didn't have such a player? I don't get why people are still so fixated on Jabari being able to create for himself. We have 3 playmakers on the floor, we need the other 2 to be impactful without creating for themselves.
As a pro, Jabari reminds me of Sleepy Sam Perkins. Pencil him in as a solid starter for the next decade.
The problem isn't just that he can't create for himself, it's that there's only a couple of ways our other guys can create for him. He can't finish on the roll He can't finish in the dunker spot He can't finish when cutting (although to be fair, he never cuts so maybe this is his hidden stud skill /s) Basically he can receive the ball on the perimeter and hit a face up jumper. That's it. I don't get why people are so obsessed with the idea of Jabari (tall sniper who can cover 1-5) and can't accept the reality of what he actually is on the court (occasionally hot shooter who plays small and really can only guard 3 and 4s).
When Jabari went out of the lineup our defense went to sh*t. He is a plus defender, one of the best PF rebounders in the league, and his long range and mid-range shot was nearing elite near the end of the season and in the playoffs. Oh, by the way, he is barely 22 years old. Your assessment of him is emotional and based on where he was drafted, not anything concrete at all.
The fact that we don't run a basic pick and pop action with Bari is probably my biggest gripe with Ime's offense tbh, this post is spot on. It's so frustrating that the coaching team can't see it.
That’s on Ime and he’s assistants. Our offense is just poor. If we could utilise Bari more in the series with the Warriors, we could definitely win it. I mean, he is a tall player with decent shooting from all distances. The Warriors could not handle hot-handed Bari, but unfortunately for us, we couldn’t make enough shots for him to take.
Nope - stats show he is a close to a net-zero defender. Our defensive troubles had less to do with him and more to do with being thin at the 4 spot (Tari was out at this time as well). His return didn't have any effect on our defense and in fact, he started coming off the bench instead. Nope - not even a top 50 rebounder in the league and only the 5th best rebounder on his own team Nope - long range and midrange shooting has never ever been elite and the latter is such a small sample size (all due to JSJs own limitation) that percentages are close to meaningless The only thing that you stated that's true is that he's 22. He's about the same level player as his cousin who was drafted #1 out of high school and I suspect his career will be similar. Go here and point to one measure that indicates JSJ has ever been anything more than mediocre at one damn thing. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/smithja05.html Your assessment of him is entirely imaginary and because of that, I imagine you'll be making excuses for him when he's still averaging 12-7 at age 25 while being paid more than guys who actually contribute to winning. So look in the mirror - you're the emotional one here.
Let me give you a couple of Yeps: Yep…he’s a better player than Tari and will prove it over the long haul. Yep…he is VERY LIMITED in this offensive system..was lucky to get 6-8 shoots a game even before coming off the bench. His “stats” have to be 50-60% shooting to put up any decent numbers on so few shots. Yep…you are the only one to think so lowly of him.. I promise you he has value in the eyes of league execs. I think he will probably be traded which may be best for both he and the Rockets. And, he will probably beat our arse when he plays us.Just curious, how many points do you expect from 6-8 shots per game ? What would Alpy, Jalen or FVV get on 6-8 shots? Yep…Bari has areas he needs to improve, no doubt. But, he has far more value than you give him.
I hope you are right about Jabari and he levels up this season. I just don’t see it except for him maybe becoming a better 3-point shooter.
I mean, you're describing Klay Thompson too. A guy who can shoot from everywhere is a very common and successful archetype. Defense is half the game and he's great at it (not to mention an excellent rebounder and good shot blocker). I really don't understand it. Who cares if he can't do that stuff yet? We literally need 2-3 players who don't get fancy with the ball and let the other guys cook. Jabari can average 18-20 points and guard 4 positions while being a great rebounder. Look for players in the NBA who can do that and look up their impact metrics. Those are giant contributions that any contender would kill for.
Again you're talking about what he can be ideally, and ignoring all the evidence of what he actually is. Klay Thompson was/is elite at moving off the ball - Jabari doesn't even seem to understand the concept of moving off the ball. Klay couldn't break down his guy on the dribble, but he could get himself open by moving. Jabari just doesn't do that - he's not just slower physically, but mentally as well. More than anything else, that explains his low shot totals - the guy stands in a spot and waits around for a pass to come to him. He's passive and somewhat oblivious to what's happening on the court. Some of it is the coaching (our inability to generate open corner threes - something from which Jabari would certainly benefit - is maddening), but much of it is Jabari himself. I'll also add that Klay Thompson was also the beneficiary of playing alongside the greatest shooter in NBA history. Jabari isn't going to have that and so that archetype (let alone a player who doesn't remotely meet it to the same degree as Thompson) isn't going to look as good on any other team. He's a good (not excellent) rebounder but mediocre at stocks / defensive playmaking. His defensive capabilities are overblown - he hasn't shown any consistent ability to guard 1s, 2s or strong 4s and 5s. Looking at his own metrics (see my post above with the link), he doesn't make giant contributions - he's largely a net zero. I don't have anything against role players, but in a year, Jabari's going to be paid a lot more than a role player if we extend him. The really excellent video by Yossi Gozlan showed how quickly we'll find ourselves at the 2nd apron if we try to keep everyone. I vote for keeping Tari because (1) he's been measurably better than Jabari and (2) the cost of extending him is significantly less. If Jabari had shown any signs of having untapped potential, then it would be worth gambling on him instead of Tari. But he hasn't flashed anything special - he's a by the numbers perimeter shooter so far in his career and I doubt he'll ever be anything more.
Tari is a better 3pt shooter and that is supposed to be Jabari’s elite skill. Tari is a better defender. Tari can dribble. Tari can take over a game periodically as a two way player. I know Tari has been injury prone but if you had to choose between the two it’s a no brainer to me plus Tari is cheaper to resign.
i am only interested in retaining bari if he shows he can defend wings from the 3 spot, not the 4 or 5 spot if he can become a plus defender on the perimeter and start knocking down 40% 3 ball everywhere then i want to keep him if he cannot defend the best off ball perimeter guys on the wing and knock down their efficiency then i want to move him out he simply is not the right big man fit next to alpi bring me maxime
