I did not realize I could edit the preferences to burn a data disc. That being said, the iTunes help file says you can only burn around 650 MB as a data CD. I don't know if they are being ultra-conservative or if there is an internal limitation.

Maybe that's it. I'll reduce the size of the playlist and see what happens.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

I'd second the external hard-drive backup idea. It is fairly inexpensive, and with all the digital files on computers these days. I don't even have that much compared to people I know, but with my music, my photos, the wife's music and photos, etc., it just makes sense.

WHOA. I just read this and the first thing that came to mind was

have you tried using your iPod as a Hard Drive?
what capacity does your iPod have?
I seem to recall you had a Mini or a Nano...

Then I saw JayZ's and percicles' responses, and thought I'd THIRD the motion.

For all the songs to fit, you'd have to instruct your iTunes NOT to update the songs at all, clear them all from the iPod (but not your library), then switch to the hard drive mode (from My Computer), then copy the files, and restore them to your other PC's hard drive.

    I fourth the motion.

Not to confuse the issue, but creating a data CD or DVD is rather simple using Windows is rather simple.

-Insert CD or DVD into your drive (I'm assuming you have a DVD or CDRW drive)

-Open Windows Explorer (right click 'run', click on 'explore')
-Right click on the folder you want to copy - go to 'send to' and select your DVD/CD ROM drive)
-Windows should now copy the files to a temp folder.
-once this is completed a new window should appear...simply click 'write to CD'

-IF a window does not open, you can click on the Drive icon and complete the same steps there.

IIRC, you can't just highlight files in iTunes and burn them to disc, you have to create a playlist first, then burn the whole playlist. try this. creat a new playlist called "Backups" or whatever. highlight all the songs you want to back up, and drag them to the new Backups playlist. highlight the playlist itself, then click the burn button.

I don't think backing files up to your iPod is a very good option, mainly because it's going to be using up space holding files that you can't listen to. If you just want to use it to move files then it's great, but an external HD or CD/DVD's are a better option for backups.

Are there certain CD-Rs that aren't compatibile maybe?

No...that can't be right. Maybe the CDs you're using are from El Cheapo store?

Bottom line is, use iTunes to LISTEN to Music, create playlists, load your iPod, create a CD to which you can listen anywhere on any CD player, and that's about it. Use something else to back up your music, whether a DVD, an external Hard Drive, the iPod itself, or a floppy disc.

When you buy or import music, are you saving it on your machine as unprotected MP3 format? This way you will be able to shar... I mean, take it with you and play it for yourself anywhere.
