The problem is that BOB doesn't work for Smith. Smith doesn't work for BOB. There's a power struggle because the roles aren't fully defined.

BOB certainly has say on the roster... and has influenced draft day decisions and free agent acquisitions. At the same time, Smith has unilaterally acquired/resigned/cut players without having to seek ultimate final approval.

Its very possible that both McNair and Smith liked the idea of getting Brock (after all the other failed QB's that BOB may have had a driving force in)... and at that point, BOB either goes along with it or has to quit.

It still doesn't mean Brock was his guy... and yes, even if Smith was the driving force behind acquiring him, he certainly has the ability to recognize his egregious mistake and try to make the most of it. Him standing by "his guy" and not trading him would be a sure-fire way for himself to get fired.

In the end, BOB saves face by saying Brock was never really his guy... Smith saves face by trading a failed acquisition for "something" (and possibly gets a better QB in the process)... and both end up surviving a high profile failed QB acquisition, something most front-offices and coaching staffs rarely survive.

I highly doubt that Smith firing BOB and standing by Brock would have ever been in consideration for a nanosecond by him... he'd be the laughing-stock of all of football.

As it is now, they're still in the same position of unclear roles... but at least they're working towards the same common goal, and one's ego isn't getting too much of the way with the other.

Givimg a huge contract to a candidate without ever interviewing him is such a childish, naive move.. obviously McNair decision. Cant be help

BoB and Rick being able to manuever out of that hole and fix McNair stupid decision is applaud worthy

I feel like that's kind of a stupid take. He's said he wants to keep playing and apparently his friendship with Jason Garrett ended because he didn't get the starting job back last year.

I love all of these meaningless tweets you see during times like these.

"I talked to Bill O'Brien and asked him who he thought would be the starting QB next year. He said he didn't know."

    Gee, thanks for the info.

Reading the tea leaves, this tells me Romo is Houston-bound. Elway already trying to play it off like he was never interested. Man I wish Osweiler chose Denver at the end of last offseason so the narrative that Elway is this great QB evaluator can just go away.

Hes not; he took Brock over Wilson and cousins. He's not a good drafter

i see it as Broncos playing hardball with DAL. nobody wants to trade for Romo and want him to be released. Sounds like a Broncos leak.

But why would they leak that they won't even consider him as a FA?
