It's time to root badly for a couple of former Rockets

I don't think the 2 elements have to be at odds like you describe them. The difference, for me, is that there is both heart/pride/soul as you describe, as well as an element of selflessness to the Argentinian team. That selflessness is what is especially appealing, and what is missing from the US team as a whole (not to say each player is extremely selfish).

I think the selfless attitude is even more endearing at the Olympics because they are not only being selfless for the sake of the team, but also for the sake of the country (or so it comes off, anyway).

I'm not actively rooting against the USA..that's too difficult. But I'll be happy if Argentina wins. And won't be too sad about the USA losing in that scenario.
