America's Best Cities for Dating 2003

Where are the best cities for young Americans to meet other young Americans? A new study by Sperling's Best Places identifies those places that have the hottest dating scenes in the nation. What makes a city good for dating? Lots of young singles, for starters—we found which places had the most single people between the ages 18 and 34. The study also considers a good climate and expenditures on social activities to be indicative of a hot dating scene.

1. State College, PA
2. East Lansing, MI
State College, Pennsylvania and East Lansing, Michigan are the best dating cities in America for the same reason—a very high percentage of the residents in these college towns are young and single. Both Penn State University and Michigan State University enroll over 40,000 students each. In State College, there is a greater percentage of singles age 18-34 than in any other city in America (81%). The average age of East Lansing residents is only 28.6 years. "College towns are natural dating hotspots," observed BestPlaces President Bert Sperling. "Of course, there are lots of young singles in college cities—but there's also a wide range of different activities and social options to explore."

3. West Hollywood, CA
West Hollywood's Sunset Strip and Santa Monica Boulevard have long been hotbeds of activity for the young and beautiful. 73% of West Hollywood's population is single and between the ages of 18 and 34. An active gay community and a beautiful climate that encourages people to be out and about produce a dating scene that has something to offer everyone. "West Hollywood is definitely a place to see and be seen," revealed Sperling. "High-class shopping and dining make it a great environment for people on the dating prowl."

4. Berkeley, CA
Berkeley, the home of the University of California at Berkeley, offers its young singles a high level of diversity. Its climate really encourages people to spend time outside mingling and meeting new people—it's never too hot or too cold, and it's sunny 260 days a year!

5. Hempstead, NY
America's largest township offers miles of beautiful coastline. The famous Jones Beach is a great place to see concerts or sunbathe. Residents here spend much more of their income on dining out and other social activities than does the average U.S. citizen. Hempstead is also a remarkably diverse city. There is an 82% probability that any two residents age 18-34 selected at random will be of different races or ethnicities.

6. New Brunswick, NJ
New Brunswick is the home of Rutgers University and the largest medical school in the country. New Brunswick is a very diverse city and the average age of its residents is only 29 years.

7. Chapel Hill, NC
Over 25,000 residents of Chapel Hill attend the University of North Carolina, the nation's oldest public university. Two-thirds of the population is singles between the ages of 18-34, and they spend more of their income dining out than the average American does.

8. West Lafayette, IN
West Lafayette is home to Purdue University, which enrolls over 38,000 students. The average age of West Lafayette residents (29.9 years) is one of the nation's lowest.

9. Atlanta, GA
Atlanta has lately enjoyed a surge of popularity among young singles, contributing to its status as a national dating hot spot. The nightlife is vibrant and varied, and Atlantans enjoy over 200 sunny days per year.

10. Washington, D.C.
The nation's capitol is hustling and bustling with young, active professionals. 67% of the population is single and between the ages of 18 and 34. Washington is a diverse city, and its residents spend an above average portion of their income on social activities and dining out.
