I dont know what the deal is with everyone else's reception...when we first talked about this lastweek, I checked my reception...not as sharp as the others...but still not too bad..I can clearly see what is on.. How can you be gettin interference from Ch 2 on the cable channel 2? Do you have your TV set for air instead of cable? KPRC on cable is channel 12 and KNWS is channel 2..When I set my tv for cable.it doesn't pickup the normal over the air channels at all, much less get interference..
I think TV stations have to pay a certain amount of money to go on the air for satellite companies (Dish, DirectTV). That's why we only see the major networks on cable. TV 51 is a low-rent TV station and cannot afford what it costs to broadcast on the satellite. I have digital cable, and TV51 comes in just fine. I picked up the converter box a couple of weeks ago, and the picture is fine. I live at the Beltway and Westheimer, I don't know if that affects the reception I recieve. For those of you who can't get a clear picture, digital cable isn't very expensive. Then you can see all the games without any problems. Are any of the pre-season games going to be televised?
I have Time Warner and ch 2 (where KNWS is located on the converter) comes in great for me. I'm not sure why you have that problem. If you just mean the picture quality is sub-par, that's all about 51. Understand that the Rockets moving there could very well be what they need to improve their issues. Once they move to digital (probably next year), none of this will matter. The big problem is that where else are the Rockets supposed to go? Channel 20 doesn't want them. Neither does 39. Fox 26 has no interest. None of the networks are going to run them. We saw the problems with the Tube (55). That's basically it. They are out of options. Let's just hope with the addition of the Rockets, KNWS can improve. By the way, KNWS stays in business, I believe, because it is owned by a big company with a lot of backing.
Just to go over my initial post, I don't know for sure what games they will cover (home or away).....but if you will watch the brief news updates, the newsperson will once in a while slide in that they are the new home of the Rockets.
Even when set on cable mode, due to KPRC's strong signal on Ch. 2 (broadcast), often times you get the Ch. 51 video and audio but with Ch. 2 shadows. It's hard to describe, but when you see it you will know it. Some possible fixes may be: 1) get a converter 2) do a direct connection (no splitters) 3) call Time Warner to rewire and tighten outdoor connections 4) if all else fails, sit in front of theTV to watch the game with one hand in the back moving the cable gently to get a good picture
There was a deadline for stations to file for "must carry" status with DirecTV/DISH. KNWS missed that deadline. They filed for an appeal, that appeal was denied. The full details of the final court decision can be seen here. http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cach....doc+KNWS+"must+carry"+DirecTV&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 The earliest KNWS can re-file to legally require DirecTV/DISH to carry them is in 2005, for coverage to commence Jan 1, 2006. The Rockets and/or Astros might be able to "convince" the carriers to get 51 on the birds sooner, but there are no guarantees there. Purely guessing, I would say there is perhaps a 5% chance they could get it done before the beginning of the season, maybe 10% by May/June, and no better than 25% before "must carry" becomes an issue again in three years. As far as "the radio shows" go, there's not much they can do to help beyond generating public support! The only one who has connections with KNWS might be John Granato, but even that is doubtful. They are actually owned by Johnson Broadcasting, which is a little tiny player. Their only other station is KLDT in Dallas.
All of these major problems because of one bonehead mistake of not mailing the letter on time by Johnson Broadcasting. And it was only ONE day late. That is terrible that these two sides could not come to an agreement. "DISCUSSION In support of its Complaint, KNWS states that DIRECTV wrongfully denied its request for mandatory carriage because of its mistaken belief that the KNWS carriage request was late-filed.14 KNWS admits that it posted its election letter via certified mail, return receipt requested on Monday, July 2, 2001, one day past the election deadline established in Section 76.66(c)(3).15 KNWS argues that this mailing was nonetheless timely in light of the fact that July 1, 2001, fell on a Sunday when the United States Post Office normally is closed for business.16 KNWS suggests that Section 1.4 of the Commissions rules, which sets forth principles governing the computation of time in determining deadlines established by the Commission, controls in the instant situation.17 Specifically, KNWS cites Section 1.4(j), which states that, unless otherwise provided if, after making all the computations provided for in this section, the filing date falls on a holiday, the document shall be filed on the next business day.18 Subsection (e)(1) further provides that for the purposes of calculations under Section 1.4, Sunday shall be considered a holiday.19 On this basis, KNWS believes that Section 1.4(j) provided it with an additional day to mail its election letter. "
i'm just glad that they got a deal done so we won't miss games. hopefully? what channel it's on really doesn't matter that much to me. is there a deal in place for fssw or was the contract never expired for home games?
It WILL matter to you if you can't get their reception. For those without cable, it is virtually impossible to tune this station in. When I had DirecTV and for the short lived time 51 carried Rockets games, it was mostly snow, even with an amplified antenna. I live in the loop and it was impossible to get 51's weak @ss signal...
Unfortunately, DirecTV/DISH have no incentive to "come to an agreement." They are both hitting physical bandwidth limitations, so it is in their best interest to reduce the number of local stations they are legally obligated to carry. The only question now is how valuable are the lost eyeballs to the Rockets and Astros, (that cannot/will not receive 51 OTA)? Further, would that figure be enough incentive to convince the carriers to get 51 up in the next year or so?
Ch 51 looks fine for me on Time Warner Digital Cable? Guess I am lucky. So 51 will have the road games and Fox Sports will have the home games?
I live in north Houston right next to Bush Airport, and I have a $90 outside antenna. I can turn the antenna a certain way and get a very acceptable\near perfect picture. Maybe you guys should look in to this. hope this helps
Are you talking about KNWS 51 or 55 The Tube? I am pretty sure 55 had the games the first part of last season.
Not necessarily..The signal in my office (no converter) and in my living room (converter) are identically good. What channel on the TW dig cable is FSSW? anyone know? I just switched from sat to dig cable 2 months ago and havent found it yet..I have a bunch of FSN channels, but I don't know which one is FSSW...
FSSW for Digital Cable is on Channel 37. Has anyone seen ANY official announcement yet that KNWS (Ch. 51) is going to air the Rockets games?
Thanks ron, I just did a google search for an "official" announcement...nothing..but I figger that commercials on KNWS aught to be enough..
Man. I must be the only one whose seen the commercials about "The New Home of The Houston Rockets". It comes on darn near every commercial.
