I didn't say they didn't have right to ask for answers. I said that they shouldn't hide their desire to know more in a perturbed cry for justice for their dead husbands. When the nation has been hit hard by a national tragedy I don't understand the compulsion to put the national government on trial in a vain pursuit of justice.
Stop being coy. I don't like the way that Coulter expressed her opinion but I don't find her "concerns" baseless.
Sure you were. You were on your couch and you Tivo'ed his show like you do every night. Why don't you just admit it? Seriously, I watched last night because I keep waiting for him to say something about his latest blunder that he refuses to acknowledge. Plus the Astros weren't on. If there's one thing I hate, it's these so-called political pundits that think their opinion about a story is bigger than the actual story itself. They're all the same on Fox, CNN and MSNBC. Same with talk radio. Their main goal is to sell books and get ratings. That's why I hate talk-radio (even though I'm a conservative) and I hate O'Reilly and I hate Mann Koulter. I don't need any of these blowhards telling me what I'm supposed to think about the issues of the day. I can think for myself.
ok..i was watching his show in bed while eating my mushroom cheesesteak with grease dripping down on me. it was mildly sensual. oh, have i said too much?? (i voted for your band...can you get me free tix now? you'd love my son. he's as big a texan fan as you are!)
Shhh, quiet. Don't let O'Reilly read that, it might turn him on. Remember, he's kind of a perv. Just ask his interns... Thanks! If we end up winning, we'll talk. I'll have my people call your people.
I do think that the damage Coulter and her clones are doing to the GOP by repelling moderates and independents is starting to outweigh their benefit in whipping up the base.
Coulter, though she stated it poorly, does have one very good point about how the news media have accorded certain people a barrier against criticism. Maureen Dowd of the NYT did this most dramatically with Cindy Sheehan when she said that those who had lost a faimly member in Iraq had "absolute moral authority". If true, what happens when another mother who has lost a son in Iraq completely disagrees with Sheehan? Do both have absolute moral authority? If so, who's absolute authority should we accept when judging the morality of the war? And what of 9/11 families who disagree with Kristen Breitwesier(sp?)? Regardless of how anyone feels about Coulter, anyone who enters the realm of public debate on these matters who should not be allowed to use their loss as a rhetorical shield against criticism.
Your right. Ann Coulter may be a raving lunatic in my opinion, but she has a right to spew her garbage; and as long as someone is buying, make a living. As for Cindy, if in the forefront of the antiwar movement helps her get out of bed in the morning, then more power to her too. Everybody has the right to express their opinion and it shouldn't be restricted.
Nobody wants to restrict her speech. If anything, her media supporters seem to want to restrict those who take issue with her comments. Letterman took that route with O'Reilly when O'Reilly went on his show. According to Dave, we must have nothing but sympathy for Sheehan, and because we are so sympathetic, we cannot criticize her. At least that's where he seemed to be going during that interview - "Honest to Christ!" Honest to Christ!"
I agree that personal experience or tragedy should not immunize you from contradiction or criticism. And people shouldn't hide behind the flag or play the patriotism card to shield their positions from criticism. However, what Coulter is doing goes beyond despicable.
Since when is selling books despicable? Now if Coulter actually believed the thinga she wrote or spoke ...
I enjoyed Olberman's take: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH0bXdhpdb8 Her point is that people aren't allowed to criticize the widows and that they are making money off of their husbands' deaths, yet she is criticizing them and she's been making millions by writing books about 9/11 and about the widows.
Coulter is the winner here. All of this PR is going to help her sell more books. She knew when she wrote this 911 widow crap that it would controversial and a conflagration. And that it would lead all of her book tour interviews. Like Howard Stern, I suspect that people are attracted to her TV interviews just to see what she says next. Thus, she is likely a ratings draw. Any bets on her next book tour that she will appear on the Today Show and spew more hate?
