I don't see how complaining about how unwatchable the Rockets are makes one a "fair weathered fan". Don't you have to be very emotionally involved in a team to be frustrated with them? Personally, I've never found games not involving the Rockets to be unbearable. Because I usually have no rooting interest in them, and really feels detached towards them. But I would cringe at even small details and minor mistakes during Rockets games. And I've turned off my TV many times(especially the last few years) in my 10 years of watching the Rockets, because my head aches watching them.
I must admit I haven't understood the panic of posters saying how terrible we are when we've lost to San Antonio. They are the best team in the league, right now. Its not a travesty to lose to them. Now, Atlanta, on the other hand ... I guess it all has to do with expectations. They are aiming to get into the playoffs, so that means at least winning a few more than you lose. They aren't a championship team. Just because they get it together and beat the Lakers, doesn't make them better than the Lakers. It does show they have the potential. So, this team will lose, and we shouldn't go freaking out everytime they do, especially to the best team in the league. But, our team has been frustrating to watch, at times this year, I must admit. Exciting moments too. lol . But, they're OUR team, so we should stick with them through thick and thin, even if it means rebuilding them this summer. No sense in getting frustrated until we can do something about it.
Hopeless is too strong a word, like despair. You can only be hopeless if you know for certain about the future, but no one can.
Some of you people are just too harsh. Personally, I never stop watching my teams for long periods of time. But there are times when the Rockets have brought me more annoyance than pleasure - and when that's happening, I can't blame anyone for just taking a break. Thanos didn't say he didn't still support the Rockets. He didn't say he'd stop rooting for them. He doesn't want to watch them beat their heads against an imaginary wall. It's understandable. I've enjoyed his posts, mostly, and I'll miss them.
Well you touched on a couple of points that don't really get hashed out around here. First, of course as a fan you're allowed to get frustrated with a team and with players. But around here, it's a knee-jerk reaction of things like "trade XX. he sucks," or "I'm not gonna watch another Rockets game until we can beat XX." Little to no constructive criticism. You know? But in answer to your first point about fair weathered fans, the poster didn't complain that it's hard to watch Rockets games because of XX and XX reasons (turnovers and a stagnant offense, for example). Instead, what I got out of it is the poster thinks the team can't win a championship with the current roster and he won't watch until we start winning more games by trading for better players. How about we root for our players to improve instead of just trying to replace whoever had a bad game last night? Go Rockets!
All you guys who think its hopeless please deactivate your CF.net accounts, sell me any tickets you may have (I'll pay you $.10 on face value), and get on with your lives. The rest of us hopers will get on watching the Rockets in the playoffs this season and beyond.
I guess this is how I feel. I understand the frustration because, unlike some of the many, many seasons (man, some of you are lucky you missed them!) when we sucked and just didn't have the talent, well, now we have the talent. But this team plays with such maddening inconsistancy so often that there are times when I want to launch myself head-first into the TV and end it all. (I may have said that before) But I couldn't give up. And if you change your mind, welcome back.
Uh, the guy isn't refusing to support the Rockets; he's just refusing to come around here (thus the "extended leave of absence"). Give him a break. We're all a little frustrated. Some more so than others...
I understand and respect your feelings. Back to my university days, I was a fan of a soccer team. I sticked with it for all 7 years in the campus. Last minute loss, ugly win, ugly loss, non-professional performance, big loss after a big win, worse loss after a bad loss, you name it, they give it out. I insist on, but finally give up. I guess it makes me feel more confortable now. At least the team had more wins last year than the year before the last, and probablely this year than last year. Yao is developing, defense is better, Norris is leaving, we have some bright spots and signs of improvement. So welcome you come back someday, maybe this summer. -Littlefish
I'll have to disagree with attendance being low, though. Compared to previous years, we're the friggin' Sacramento Kings. Here's the really sad part, though. Atlanta is last in the NBA, averaging 13,500 per game. That is STILL about 3K more than what the Rockets were averaging a couple seasons ago...
While I may not entirely agree with Thanos' take, I missed the part of being a fan where we agree to suspend our ability to evaluate our team's talent, or point out it's flaws. If being a fan is akin to being a Bush supporter, count me out...
no sh*t Sherlock...... a shame...I hate to see guys with good track records of posting give up.. I figger if I didnt give up when we sucked to high heaven and had no hope of getting better(70s)...no sense in giving up now when we have possibly one of the brightest up and coming stars in the league on our team.. Its a good thing we got Yao...otherwise...imagine this place.
Is it hopeless? It depends on why you are following the Rockets. Obviously, if you are not satisifed until the day Rockets win a championship again, then you are bound to be hopeless for many more months to come. If you are enjoying our path to greatness every step of the way, enjoying every win that comes along, enjoying the improvement (in general), then surely it is not that hopeless. Being a newbie NBA and Rockets fan, I find myself enjoying the process. Sure, there are always ups and downs, but usually more ups than downs, and it is far from hopeless. SS999
Thanos. Seriously. The Rockets can't lose a good fan like you. One lost fan is one too many. We need you to stick it out with the rest of us. Take it easy. Think things through. Right now, its just you are real emotional after a loss. Give it time. Then come back and talk to us.
